While we are happy to see the first person of color nominated to the Supreme Court of Canada, this was a missed opportunity to have Indigenous representation at the Supreme Court and to strive towards gender parity. cbc.ca/amp/1.6069406?…

To all the Brown (and other) lawyers reviewing the accomplishments of Justice Jamal. Hey…if your out of court accomplishments include getting your kids fed and in bed on time and in court you managed to contact your client before they got bench warranted, you’re a winner to me

PM announces nomination of Ontario Court of Appeal Justice Jamal to SCC thelawyersdaily.ca/articles/27590… “The Canadian Bar Association is happy that with the nomination of Justice Jamal, who was born in Kenya, the SCC will be more reflective of the diverse population it serves. " #SCC

The OBA will continue to advocate for an Indigenous nominee to the highest court. As the government looks to fill very large shoes on the Court of Appeal, the OBA will be looking to ensure that Court reflects the diversity of those who look to it for justice. 3/3

Today's announcement is a critical step towards a Canadian judiciary that reflects those it serves. True access to justice depends on having a judiciary that brings diverse experiences and perspectives. 2/3
