Am totally with you on this, but there again we have cared with people for many yrs, so we base our comments on real world experience (and some research). Communicating Caring Connecting
Anna Park@Annagoge

I think my lasting feeling from the #Alz Ad is that it conflicts w my own experience of the person still being there, even in the later stages. Recognising that ppl are always listening & still able to connect, lies at the heart of good #dementia #care #TheLongGoodbye #StillAlive

Just a thought, if a person has moderate dementia they may not be able to make a judgement about whether they should boycott listening to/watching an advert, but then its too late once its on! Also if not in a position to remove yrself from the radio/tv as in communal spaces

An important point from @DarrenGrimes77. We have been contacted by insiders and told that many @alzheimerssoc staff are devastated disappointed and distressed by the release of this anomalous damaging and divisive video.

A powerful chain of commentary from @LoreleiKing @DementiaUK The second clip provides an alternative ending to the @alzheimerssoc ad about gov and policy responsibilities rather than the nihilistic view that dementia = death

Thread 1 I've been thinking more about @alzheimerssoc ad & reaction to it. Some ppl are critical of the 'living well with dementia' idea that I unashamedly advocate for. They say that this shows ppl are wrongly diagnosed and/or don't have dementia 🧵

Carers might say 'This is killing me' and many of us would deeply sympathise. Carers deserve our utmost care, respect, support but so do people living with dementia. Carers might say 'I feel I've lost her' but plwd might feel they've lost even more. Yet they still have existence.
Prof June Andrews@ProfJuneAndrews

And carers say “I’m very much on my knees. Because of x or y that I’m not allowed to say in case it frightens or depresses someone. And I feel as if my darling died already, but I’m not allowed to say that either. Because the AS tried to say it for me, and they got slammed.”

Totally get this but many don’t sanitise, we work with hope based on yrs of professional experience & authentically co produced research
Anna Park@Annagoge

Sonia Sodha’s article is a helpful read. She agrees the death metaphor is ‘horribly dehumanising’ & feels the advert ‘went too far’ but she also highlights why more ppl need to be talking about #dementia without sanitising the damage it causes. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
