EU didn’t fix Hungary’s democracy it changed the incentives around it. By tying funding to rule-of-law reforms, it made illiberal governance costly and democratic alignment more rewarding. As @MayaSionT argues, this helped voters see that political choices have real consequences.

Defending media independence in Europe 🇪🇺 Plans in the Czech Republic to replace public media license fees with state funding raise real concerns about political influence over journalism. We need free press staying off interference. 🔗 euractiv.com/news/czech-gov…

Hungarians spoke clearly on April 12: accountability, rule of law, and democratic renewal. We welcome Péter Magyar’s victory and his commitments—but now comes the real test: delivering reforms that rebuild trust and strengthen institutions. 🔗 reuters.com/world/europe/h…

Yesterday, Hungary got off the “corrupt, pro-Russian oligarchy” train at the “united, rule-of-law-based Europe” station. This is just the beginning of a long journey, because simply changing the train driver isn’t enough. Still, it’s a huge step towards real “good change.

Hungary stands at a defining moment Democracy depends on participation. A massive turnout especially from young voters and communities beyond big cities can shape the future. This is more than an election. Every vote counts. #Mobilize. Show up. #Vote.

Hungary votes today. A complex system; district races, vote transfers, and late ballots from abroad means the final outcome comes later, not on election night. 👆Expect delays 👆Expect contested margins 👆Expect competing narratives oko.press/wybory-na-wegr…

Four days to Hungary’s election: projections suggest the opposition Tisza party could secure a two-thirds majority. For civil society, the issue isn’t just who wins but how power is used. Supermajorities test checks & balances, institutional independence, and civic space.

Democracy is more than elections. As Carnegie Endowment for International Peace notes, “win or lose, Viktor Orbán has broken Hungary’s democracy.” Elections alone aren’t enough captured institutions & restricted civic space can still trap democracy. Hungary is a warning.

Without civic space, elections cannot be fully democratic. As Hungary heads to its April 12, 2026 vote, the real issue isn’t just who wins but whether conditions for a free and fair election truly exist. Civil society warns: Uneven playing field & Constrained information space

New poll (Mar 28, 2026) shows a shift in Hungary: TISZA leads with 56% vs. Fidesz at 37% among decided #voters. With ~25% still undecided, momentum may shift further. But polling remains contested amid pressure on independent research. Will elections ensure fairness? #Hungary
