The system works when you call the managers to order asserting your rights as a citizen. My encounter with IBEDC that has saved me over ₦800,000 in power bills. About a week ago, I wrote angrily to IBEDC via dm. Prior to sending the text, I had recorded a voice message via their helpline detailing how they were running a scam with supply in my estate. I was really upset and I threatened a class action suit 😅. They responded and asked for my details. Then yesterday, to my surprise, I bought light and I was billed ₦32/kWh against the ₦225/kWh that we pay per unit. With ₦140,000, I got over 4,000 units. Before now, it would have cost me over ₦900,000 to get 4k units. Here’s the background: I live in an area placed on Band A. We have very stable light, guaranteed minimum of 20hrs daily and light will always be on overnight. However, for over two weeks, we had no overnight supply, and total daily supply dropped to about 12 hours or less. At one point, we had no power for 48 hours, the worst experience in seven years here. So out of frustration, I escalated the issue through their official channels. I explained that I had documented supply hours over the past two months and that it clearly provided grounds for legal action, especially since Band A comes with obligations. If those aren’t met, the feeder is meant to be downgraded so customers aren’t charged premium tariffs unfairly until whatever issue they had is fixed. So I got a call yesterday, and boom. I paid wayyyyy less for an improved supply (18hrs since then). Everyone in the community will also benefit from the action. Know your rights and put the system to the test, the people at the backend (especially service providers) get away with a lot because we don’t escalate issues through appropriate channels.

I still try to believe Nigeria will be better… but this morning tested that belief. I’ve used this mechanic for about 4 years. So I trust him. Yesterday, my car started making a small sound when I turned the steering. Nothing serious. I took it to him this morning. He checked it for barely 2 minutes, then shook his head. “Oga, this one don affect your rack and pinion… and your pump too.” That already sounded expensive. He calculated and told me, “Everything go cost like 150k… but I go do 130k for you. You can just find me small thing for workmanship” Something didn’t feel right. I told him to open the bonnet. At first, he tried to convince me it wasn’t necessary, but I insisted. He lifted the car bonnet, and I stood there watching closely. In less than 5 minutes, the problem showed itself just one small worn-out rubber part. Nothing serious. I asked him, “Na this cause everything?” He just said, “E go still lead to bigger problem.” I called another mechanic immediately. He said, “That thing no pass 10k total.” That moment was just… quiet. No explanation. No eye contact. I just told him to fix that part and I left. Driving out, one thing kept ringing in my head: Sometimes it’s not strangers that scam you… it’s people you’ve trusted for years. And honestly, that’s why it’s hard to keep believing everything will be better.

Even drugs you can’t find in big hospitals like FMC or Lantoro Hospital… Once you get to Precious, you will always see it. In fact, a lot of these big hospitals and pharmacies even refer people to Precious to get drugs that seem impossible to find… drugs that are beyond their own reach. So one day, I decided to test the rumour for myself. I said to myself, “Today na today.” How will you tell me that they have all the drugs on this earth? Lai lai… I no believe am. Before going there, I had already gone to Google to search for some very hard-to-get drugs… the kind I was sure had not even reached Nigeria. When I got to Precious Pharmacy, the first thing that hit me was the warm reception. As I approached the entrance, a well-dressed attendant gently opened the door for me with a warm smile. “Welcome, sir.” Ah ah… as if I be one important person. At that moment, I felt like a governor. I was smiling sheepishly... I almost forgot why I came there.. But I quickly cautioned myself and walked inside. As I stepped into the pharmacy... I was immediately approached by a doctor standing behind the counter. He had a name tag on his chest. “Welcome to Precious Pharmacy,” he said politely. He studied it carefully. Then he said, “Please give me a minute.” I watched him as he searched for it on his computer. Nothing showed up. He called one of his colleagues. “Have you heard of this drug before?” His colleague looked even more confused. Meanwhile, I just stood there… enjoying the whole drama. Me, I just needed one thing: Let him say “No" at least for once.. But that simple “No”… was now the problem. Maybe since they started working there, they had never given anyone a “No.” But me? I needed that “No” today. To proof them wrong. Finally, Dr. Richard came back. “I don’t think there is any drug with this name,” he said. “I even searched the global database… nothing came up.” Then he looked at me again.

A few days ago, a colleague said he wanted to buy goat meat to share with his guys. I remembered my neighbour once told me where he usually buys from, it’s close to his former house, and I know the place. I didn’t bother calling him; after work, we just drove there. To my surprise, No goat costs ₦66k. The highest was m ₦42k. I stood there calculating… ₦24k difference every single month. When I got home, I confronted him. His response shocked me. "I brought the connection nah. Shouldn't I earn from the update I gave you people? That's my stress and transport." ₦24,000. Every month. For stress and transport to a market twenty minutes away. His audacity was so clean that, it made me speechless till now.
