Pompey the Great made a name for himself destroying and resettling the vanquished pirates of the Med sea. Then after shit hit the fan, his son Sextus became a pirate commander. This is like the Godfather movies in reverse. El Chapo's Dad owned media empire was legit, so his son decides to sell blow.
My only point was that Augustus created a successful cult of personality, delegated responsibilities to competent people, prevented civil war, and had a long reign. He did some underhanded shit, but he was great at his job, but a big part of his persona was this humility (this was an act but what can we say, it worked, and probably staved off unimaginable butchery)
disregarding policies etc were far kinder to their staff then dem ones, and this was true of their wives (and I am no fan of any of these puppets) whereas the Dem ones were generally world class pricks. Apparently Hillary Clinton detail was a punishment if you fucked up. This is one source and anecdotal but the book was funny af
@Ltdsoltd It is fiction of course, and probably makes the emperor more ascetic than he was irl but it is beautiful. I really really love that book. Wonderful read. Idk if you are into historical fiction.
@Ltdsoltd I made a thread at one point and it is buried somewhere I don't know how to find old tweets, on this beautiful novel by John Williams called Augustus, which is a series of letters that discusses this time
@Ltdsoltd It was kind of a necker cube view of the time idk. Maybe Froude's picture is a hagiography, but it felt like a good faith explanation of the era, and it showed WHY people could get behind a man like Caesar and let him lead.
@Ltdsoltd I went into that book having read various contemporary sources on Caesar as well as some primary sources, and was still blown away at how good Froude's book was.
