Pompey the Great made a name for himself destroying and resettling the vanquished pirates of the Med sea. Then after shit hit the fan, his son Sextus became a pirate commander. This is like the Godfather movies in reverse. El Chapo's Dad owned media empire was legit, so his son decides to sell blow.

My only point was that Augustus created a successful cult of personality, delegated responsibilities to competent people, prevented civil war, and had a long reign. He did some underhanded shit, but he was great at his job, but a big part of his persona was this humility (this was an act but what can we say, it worked, and probably staved off unimaginable butchery)

@Ltdsoltd It was kind of a necker cube view of the time idk. Maybe Froude's picture is a hagiography, but it felt like a good faith explanation of the era, and it showed WHY people could get behind a man like Caesar and let him lead.

@Ltdsoltd I went into that book having read various contemporary sources on Caesar as well as some primary sources, and was still blown away at how good Froude's book was.
