Yes, it's true - ChatGPT does route some GPT-4o conversations to different models than what you selected I decided to look into this since I've been seeing more posts about it lately and many of you asked me if it's actually happening Even if you select GPT-4o or GPT-5, if the conversation turns to sensitive emotional topics like loneliness, sadness or depression, this triggers an auto-switch to gpt-5-chat-safety, which is also visible in the "regenerate response" tooltip as GPT-5, likely to better handle these sensitive topics and provide more appropriate support In addition to the safety routing, some GPT-4o prompts also get auto-switched to "gpt-5-a-t-mini" (shown as GPT-5 Thinking Mini in the interface) for what seems like requests asking for something potentially illegal (maybe also others)
