It’s officially spring! 🌱 As you declutter your garage and clean out closets, add a few preparedness chores to your list: 1) Clear your rain gutters and storm drains of debris (helps prevent water backup during spring downpours). 2) Secure or store any loose yard items – spring winds can send trash cans flying! 3) Check the expiration dates in your first aid kit and pantry. A safer home is a happier home. #SpringCleaning #SafetyTips

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Denver! 🍀 While you’re wearing green today, remember: preparedness isn’t about luck. Disasters can strike anyone so don’t leave it to chance. Take a moment today to do one proactive thing: sign up for emergency alerts, stock one extra gallon of water, or talk through a family emergency plan over dinner. May your day be lucky and safe! #NoLuckNeeded #Preparedness

Did you know? Denver’s worst flood in modern history struck in 1965, before many of our current dams existed. The South Platte River rampaged through the city, claiming 21 lives and causing what would be over $4 billion in damage today. Thanks to flood control projects since then, we’re safer but no system is foolproof. If a flood threatens: be ready to evacuate, move to higher ground immediately, and never walk or drive through floodwaters. Turn around, don’t drown!

Spring is around the corner, and so is flood season. Denver’s rivers and creeks will rise as snow melts and spring rains come. Now’s the time to consider flood insurance. Remember, most homeowners’ policies do NOT cover floods. It takes 30 days for a new policy to start, so plan ahead. Just 1 inch of water can cause about $25,000 in damage to your home. Don’t risk it: if you’re in a low-lying or flood-prone area (think neighborhoods near Cherry Creek or the South Platte), get protected and have an evacuation plan.

National Love Your Pet Day is Feb 20. Let’s show our four-legged friends some emergency love. Ask yourself: Do I have extra food and meds packed for my pet? Do I have a copy of their vaccination records? Do I have a leash or carrier ready to grab? If we get separated, could I prove they’re mine? They depend on you for walks, belly rubs, and staying safe. Don’t leave them behind. #PetPreparedness #LoveYourPetDay #DenverPetsMatter

You don’t need a medical degree to save a life. You just need about 10 minutes. Learn hands-only CPR. Practice it with your family. Because 70% of cardiac arrests happen at home. Not in a hospital. Not at the gym. Right in your living room. This month, look up a local CPR training. It might be the most important thing you ever learn.

Cold weather PSA: Protect yourself from carbon monoxide. This invisible, odorless gas can build up if you use grills or generators indoors and it can be deadly. 😰 Make sure you have a CO detector on every level of your home (test the batteries!), and never heat your house with an oven or BBQ. Stay warm and safe

What is a PSPS and Why Does Xcel Do It? Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) is when Xcel Energy intentionally cuts power to certain areas during extreme wildfire conditions. This proactive outage happens to prevent sparks from power lines igniting wildfires when high winds and dry weather create critical fire risk. It’s a last-resort safety measure but sometimes public safety outweighs keeping the lights on. PSPS shuts off power temporarily to keep our community safe from catastrophic wildfires.
