Thank you for your prayers as I mark my first year as Archbishop of Detroit. It has been a blessing to serve the people of our Archdiocese, and I am deeply grateful for your faith and witness. Please know that you remain in my prayers.

For nearly two centuries, the faithful have gathered in historic Corktown to honor Saint Patrick and celebrate the community's deep Irish roots. I was honored to join the Most Holy Trinity parish community today as they marked an incredible 191 years celebrating this feast day.

Today I celebrated the annual Rose Mass in gratitude for the many Catholic health care workers who bring Christ’s healing presence to those in need. Thank you to all in the medical community who serve with dedication, faith, and compassion.

In this weekend's Gospel, the Pharisees witness a miracle yet still refuse to believe. Why does Jesus perform miracles, if not to convince the doubtful? He is revealing something much more powerful: signs of God's Kingdom and gifts of His love.

With humility, I offer this pastoral message to express my heartfelt sorrow for the evil of abuse and the profound suffering it has caused. While words cannot undo the damage, please know they are offered in a spirit of repentance, compassion, and a continued commitment to healing. Jesus' encounter with the woman at the well reminds us that true discipleship often calls us away from our comfort zones. If we are to be faithful to the Gospel, we must go out to the Samarias of our world and accompany those on the margins with compassion and courage.

Abraham went up the mountain in fear and came down a man of deeper faith. The Apostles went up in uncertainty and came down strengthened for their journey to Jerusalem. God calls us to climb our own mountains, too, so we can return strengthened for the journey ahead.

Today at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, we joyfully celebrated the Rite of Election with our catechumens and candidates. May the Holy Spirit guide each of them as they continue their journey toward Easter and full communion with the Church.

Crude words, judgement of others, and malicious negativity have no place in the life of a disciple. This Lent, consider fasting from language that harms our relationship with God and our neighbors. In doing so, we allow Christ to shape our hearts more closely to His own.

Please join me in praying for Bishop James Misko as he is installed today as Bishop of Tucson, my former diocese. I give thanks to God for Bishop Misko's generous “yes” to this call and pray that the Lord blesses his ministry among the good people of southern Arizona.

Today we began the holy season of Lent with ashes, reminding us that we are dust and to dust we shall return. May these forty days be a fruitful time of repentance and renewal as we prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Along with fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, I invite you to try another redemptive penance: Reach out to someone you haven't spoken to in a while. May your reconnection be grace for both of you, and may the days ahead lead us all to a joyful Easter.

Finally, my first Paczki Day as Archbishop of Detroit! What a great way to come together as a community and enjoy one (or two!) sweet treats before Lent begins. I loved the lemon filling. Which should I try next?

Yesterday at Most Holy Redeemer, we celebrated the second anniversary of the parish receiving a relic of José Luis “Joselito” Sánchez del Río. His cry of “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” in the face of martyrdom continues to inspire all who seek to follow Christ with courage and love.

A recent post on Truth Social under President Donald Trump’s name used a racist meme to depict former President Obama and his wife, Michelle. It is very disturbing that anyone, much less the President of the United States or his staff members, should see racist memes as humorous or appropriate expressions of political discourse. They are deeply offensive and must be condemned in the strongest terms. I join my voice to the many calling for a public apology with full acceptance of responsibility, and I also bristle at claims from the White House that the rage many of us feel is “fake.” Beyond the necessary apology, I also believe that we all must examine our conscience, individually and collectively. We need to recognize and acknowledge how prevalent racism continues to be in our society and commit ourselves to vigilance in counteracting its harm. As Catholics, we believe that every person is made in the image and likeness of God. This sacred truth compels us to treat every human being with dignity, respect, and love. We must recommit ourselves to vigilance in counteracting the wounds caused by the evil of racism as truly we are called to be one human family.

Yesterday I visited the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The stories shared here reflect incredible faith and perseverance in the face of injustice. I'm grateful for the chance to listen, learn, and honor the rich legacy of African American history in our nation.

Today we lifted our hearts in prayer with students from across the @archofdet during our annual Catholic Schools Week Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. May God bless all of our youngest disciples as they grow in faith, knowledge, and service.

Today we celebrated a Mass for Justice and Peace, in gratitude for the life, work, and example of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. May his legacy continue to inspire in all of us a commitment to building a society rooted in justice, peace, and respect for every person.
