I have watched Messi for over 15 years, and I still don’t have the right words. Last night, he played what is likely his final game on Argentine soil, a goal, an assist, 5-0, 57,000 people standing and screaming his name, and even then it felt like it wasn’t enough, like no crowd could ever be loud enough to match what he deserves. That’s the thing about Messi, he makes you feel like the world owes him a debt it can never fully pay. He didn’t just play football, he played it like it was language, like it was the only honest way he knew how to speak. And for two decades, the whole world stopped and listened. I am not Argentine, I have no blood in that soil, but last night I felt something I can only describe as loss, the specific grief of watching something irreplaceable begin its goodbye. There will be a 2026 World Cup, there will be more football, more names, more careers, but there will not be another Messi, not in my lifetime, not in yours, not in the lifetime of anyone reading this. Last night was the beginning of the end, and even the end was beautiful. All football lovers need to appreciate him

Let's learn some history. Why do Italians like Argentines other than the many Argentines who have played in Italy? Other than Mauro Camoranesi or Mateo Retegui who’re born Argentine but played for the Italian national team. Have you ever wondered why Javier Zanetti has an Italian-sounding name? It's because he has Italian ancestry. It's a brotherhood that started in the 19th century. Italians left their country in droves and travelled to Argentina. According to researchers and various publications, more than 2 million Italians migrated to Argentina between 1870 and 1960, a period of almost a century minus a decade. The migration was as a result of the search for a better life and a means of escape of war. That mass immigration of Italians to Argentina changed the demographics of the Argentine populace. In Argentina today, it's believed that at least 30 millions people have some form of Italian ancestry. That's more than 60% of the Argentine population. Argentina’s strong Spanish culture is mixed with their core Italian-acquired traits and it's seen in their lifestyles. Italian customs are held highly in Argentina. They share the love for similar foods too. It's also believed that nearly 60% of Argentine surnames have Italian roots. So, Argentines love Italians and vice versa and it's why Scaloni, and possibly many Argentines are unhappy about Italy’s World Cup miss. My name is Rilwan, I love and write about football systems, memories and the depths behind the game. Follow me and repost if you want more of this.

@FabrizioRomano What an embarrassment… we went from winning 4 World Cups to failing to qualify three times in a row. Looks like this year I’ll be cheering for our Argentinian brothers again.

🚨💣 Emotional scenes from the Argentina camp. Lionel Messi sat quietly on the cooler, watching his teammates train as he tried to take in and savour what might be his last training session on Argentine soil before his final World Cup. This image is heavy. We still don’t know what it will mean in the future. This is where men cry. 🥹🇦🇷

Honest question for every Inter fan that is reading this: if you knew what would happen in the final and became aware of how it would end, would you still celebrate this win?
