Since When Did adherence to a political ideology require clearance from a defense secretary? So, is being a communist or merely being accused of having communist views now a crime in the Philippines? Must every senator submit a political-belief clearance to the Defense Secretary Gibo before speaking? What is funny is the spectacle: a civilian defense chief seemingly acting like the nation’s ideological guidance counselor, demanding explanations for someone’s personal political beliefs. What is wrong is far more serious. In a democracy, people may hold unpopular, radical, conservative, socialist, communist, capitalist, or simply confusing political ideas. Criminal liability must arise from unlawful acts, not from labels, suspicions, or ideological profiling. Senator Robin Padilla may be questioned for his policies, statements and performance. But forcing him to defend an alleged ideology risks turning legitimate debate into political red-tagging. Today the label is “communist.” Tomorrow, anyone who questions military policy, foreign bases or government decisions may be branded a threat. Ideas should be challenged with better ideas, not interrogated as though thought itself were contraband. Otherwise, the real threat is not communism. It is the growing belief that democracy permits only opinions approved by those in power. Goodness! Duh! 🙄🙄🙄

In hindsight, theres one thing the Cayetano siblings did well yesterday and it was unintentionally giving Atty Chel Diokno the spotlight he deserves. Every question/argument they threw at him only gave him a chance to prove hes one of the country’s finest legal minds.
