As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we remember a moment in history when Dr. King visited Michigan, just three weeks before he was assassinated. On March 14, 1968, Dr. King spoke to a crowd of over 2000 people in the gymnasium of Grosse Pointe South High School (now Grosse Pointe South). The visit was organized by the Grosse Pointe Human Relations Council, a local citizens' group concerned with fair housing. In the speech entitled “The Other America”, Dr. King spoke about the stark economic and racial disparities, contrasting the flourishing white America with the struggling black America, and addressed the Vietnam War. He received a standing ovation inside but faced hecklers and protests from anticommunist groups outside, who criticized his anti-war stance. It was one of Dr. King's final major speeches, a poignant moment of dialogue in a divided community just weeks before his death in Memphis, Tennessee. A historic marker now stands at the school to commemorate the speech. Today, the City of Detroit Office of Inspector General honors the life, memory, and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His message of hope, justice, and the need to confront systemic inequality inspired the world. His vision and leadership continue to guide the fight for civil rights and unity across generations. Happy MLK Day! #Detroit #MLKDay2026
