The victim was dispatched as a child, but no age was given. 3 Mb/B suspects wearing ski masks, on dirtbikes. Pretty fluid at the moment so things are changing minute by minute. #DetroitEMS Medic 10 is responding. Unfortunately, communication between officers is proving difficult at the moment. #Detroit's West Side. Map: maps.app.goo.gl/pQ67JxhFWeGCU4…

So there you are. You wake up and your house is on fire. Or there’s a massive industrial blaze nearby pumping God-knows-what into the air. Or you’re trapped in the twisted wreckage of your vehicle, praying somebody gets there in time. Then Fire shows up. They run into the inferno your home has become. They fight fires in junkyards, factories and chemical-filled hellscapes that can poison or kill them just for breathing the smoke. They cut people out of mangled cars so those people have a chance to make it to a hospital alive. There are no guarantees those firefighters walk away from those scenes unharmed. No magical safety measure that protects them from every toxin they absorb, every carcinogen they’re exposed to, every injury they suffer while saving our asses. And we hear about it all the time, firefighters battling cancer, respiratory disease and lifelong injuries directly tied to the job. Then, after years of service, some are forced to battle the very systems that should be protecting them. Bureaucrats and politicians throw around $100 words while the people actually doing the dangerous work are left fighting for basic support and dignity. That brings us to Detroit Fire Captain Daniel Schaecher. More than 30 years with the Detroit Fire Department. Three decades of running toward danger while everybody else ran away from it. Three decades of smoke, toxins, collapsing structures, sleepless nights and unimaginable situations in service to the people of Detroit. Now Capt. Schaecher is battling occupational cancer, the kind of risk firefighters everywhere live with every single time they put on their turnout gear. These men and women know the risks. They still show up. They don’t hesitate when your family is trapped. They don’t hesitate when your neighborhood is burning. They don’t hesitate when your life depends on them. The least they should get in return is support, respect and the peace of mind that if the job destroys their health , or takes their life, their family won’t be abandoned to fight alone. First responders save our lives on our worst days. They have certainly saved mine more than once. We owe them far more than applause and slogans. They certainly shouldn’t become victims of some third-party, rate-worker compensation “expert” doctor, some anesthesiologist hack who isn’t remotely qualified to determine whether occupational cancer developed over THIRTY YEARS of firefighting service is duty related. The doctor says it’s not duty related? Oh, fuck all the way off. Thirty years of running into burning buildings, breathing toxic smoke, absorbing carcinogens through skin and lungs, crawling through collapsing structures and chemical-filled environments while the rest of us are running the other direction, but somehow the cancer just magically appeared unrelated to the job? That’s insulting. Not just to Capt. Daniel Schaecher, but to every firefighter who has ever put on turnout gear. And if Capt. Schaecher loses this fight, his family risks being abandoned not only by the City of Detroit, but by all of us who benefited from his service for three decades. They've given him until July 5th to dispute the doctor's finding, or else...ffs. Want history? We’ve already seen this shameful garbage before. Lt. Dale Fahoome fought not only cancer, but the City itself while trying to have his illness recognized as duty related. Imagine battling for your life while simultaneously battling bureaucracy, paperwork and people trying to save money off your suffering. His family endured stress no family should ever face during a medical crisis. Then there was SFF Patrick Trout. Injured fighting a fire, struck in the head, later passing away — and once again the family had to fight the City. Fight a fire. Fight the injury. Fight the cancer. Fight the system. Apparently the battle never ends for these men and women. The dangerous work? Fine. They signed up knowing the risks. But forcing firefighters and their families into legal and financial warfare after their bodies are destroyed protecting the public? That’s disgraceful. These firefighters gave the City everything they had physically, mentally and emotionally. The absolute least the City can do is stand behind them when the curtain falls instead of treating them like liabilities on a spreadsheet. The City of Detroit should be ashamed. And I gotta tell ya, I'm pissed a firefighter receiving an award has to even mention it during the award ceremony, seen below...it shouldn't have to be, but these days its necessary. I'm out. Butterfly Kisses, hugs and all that happy happy horseshit. The Detroit Scanner #DetroitFire

Shooting: #DetroitPolice are investigating a shooting in NE #Detroit. Officers are at a local hospital reporting a privately conveyed shooting victim. The victim stated he was on St Fair near a park, heard shots being fired and then some pain. Officers are attempting to find the park he was near. There was an associated ShotSpotter activation on Rossini, but Rossini is close to 2 parks, Wish/Egan and Heilmann. I imagine they'll figure it out with more info from the victim. The victim was struck in the lower right arm.
