When you push to GitHub with your API keys hardcoded and wonder why your Paystack balance is draining, I already know what happened. GitHub is public by default if you are a student who doesn't know better. Even private repos get leaked. Bots scrape GitHub for exposed keys in real time. Stripe, Paystack, AWS, Twilio..... they all have known key patterns. The bots find them in minutes. Your .env file should never touch Git. Ever. The minimum setup: • .env in your .gitignore before your first commit • .env.example committed with empty values as documentation • Secrets in your hosting platform's environment config not in the code I have seen Nigerian devs lose ₦200k+ in Twilio SMS charges overnight because of one exposed key. The damage is real, fast and usually non-refundable.
