Beef is eaten in parts of the Northeast too, but only in Kerala do some people openly flaunt it as a way to provoke others. When I first visited Kerala at 19 on a government-sponsored trip, it came as a cultural shock. I walked into a restaurant wanting a simple dosa, but hesitated because beef dishes dominated the menu. Since beef has been banned in Odisha since the 1960s, this was my first exposure to such widespread availability. For someone from a deeply Hindu state, it felt less accommodating and more like a quiet disregard for Hindu sensitivities. I admired Kerala’s beauty and its people, but this experience left a lasting impression, one that still makes me cautious about where I choose to eat there.
