"Kerala-exceptionalists" are delusional. Malayāḷam wasn't even distinct from Western dialects of (Old) Tamiḻ until around the 9th–11th century and separate martial tradition (Kalarippayattu vs. Cilampam) didn't emerge until the 13th century. Anthropologically, Malayāḷis are barely even an independent ethnicity from Tamilians (they share a common ancient cultural base and only diverged into separate regional identities during the medieval period), let alone a completely separate civilization. Even the marumakkatāyam inheritence system that distinguishes them from Tamils is likely borrowed from the aḷiyasantāna system of the Tuḷuvas. The original inheritence system of the Ceras was makkatāyam. Tuḷuvas have a better argument for separate ethnicity and independent culture (Nāga ārādhane, bhūta kōla, pāḍḍanas, etc., etc.) from Malayāḷis and Kannaḍigas than Malayāḷis have for being distinct from Tamils. If your definition of civilization is so narrow as to define "Malayalam civilization" as a separate civilization from "Tamil civilization," then you should concede that "Bhojpuri civilization" is separate from "Maithili civilization."
