Remembering the Battle of Iwo Jima
From February to March 1945, less than 70,000 U.S. Marines faced unimaginable conditions on Iwo Jima, fighting a fierce 36-day battle on an island of almost 10 square miles.
Nearly 7,000 Marines and Navy Corpsmen made the ultimate sacrifice, and nearly 20,000 were wounded.
It led to an unprecedented number of decorations awarded to those who fought in the battle, with 27 Medals of Honor awarded.
We honor their courage and remember their sacrifice.

The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest medal for valor in combat that can be awarded to members of the armed forces.
Since its creation in 1861, more than 3,400 Medals of Honor have been awarded to service members.
117 of those heroes are buried and memorialized at ABMC sites.
We remember the courage they had to go above and beyond the call of duty.

The Gainesville, GA hero @USArmy Lt. Alexander Nininger was the first Medal of Honor recipient of World War II. On this National Medal of Honor Day, we remember how he fought his way through enemy positions destroying several enemy groups and snipers at the Battle of Bataan, before succumbing to his wounds. A cenotaph at @ArlingtonNatl memorializes his service and sacrifice. It’s an honor to share the same hometown as this courageous hero.
