Just a reminder, @hakaimagazine staff has an exciting 2025 to look forward to--we're migrating. Help us if you can, environmental journalism needs support! We have challenges but the world is not a complete dumpster fire: biographic.com/hakai-magazine…

Hakai Magazine
Hakai Magazine@hakaimagazine·
In July, we told you that Hakai Magazine will close at the end of December. Since sharing that devastating news, we’ve worked very hard to find a way to keep publishing the coastal journalism you love. We’re happy to finally announce that our team has a new home!

@Aerin_J @_ColinS_ @Isabella_Kam That’s exactly it! I’m a copy editor, not a news editor, at Hakai, but Colin has a ton of expertise and is always looking for ways to mentor others. He suggested having interested staff begin editing news stories under his guidance! We’re lucky to have such a kindhearted team!

When we first learned Hakai was to close, we made it a mission to get everyone on staff the experience they need to best present themselves to the world. This story, by @Isabella_Kam, is also the Hakai news editing debut of copy editor @DevonBidal

Social media just reminded me that this was once the space I lived and worked in. It was a 2-bedroom house in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains that had once been a general store, and rent was $900

The effort to save @hakaimagazine.com is fully underway. So far, we've lined up commitments worth about half of what we need to keep publishing. Ideally, we want one or two more large foundations or donations to give us a solid floor before we throw the doors to reader donations.

I could not love the team @hakaimagazine more. I love being part of it after being a solitary freelancer for so long. I love the vision, the skills, the kindness, the energy. This is a 100 percent earnest tweet and I don't even care.

I've always put a big emphasis on working with students and new science writers, because I know its a weird, small field that's hard to break into. But I'm blown away by how many people are saying @hakaimagazine was one of the first places that ever gave them a chance

It's hard to believe, with all the billions flowing to environmental projects, that the foundation / donor world can't find the funds to sustain this modest, yet effective, journalism project. As @cestmoiLanglois says below: "The core magazine team, myself included, is trying to keep a version of the publication going. If you know of any foundations or donors who might be interested in helping, please reach out."
Krista Langlois@cestmoiLanglois

Well, it's official: @hakaimagazine is ceasing publication at the end of the year because our funding is being cut. I'm incredibly sad for my colleagues, for the freelance community, for the journalism ecosystem as a whole, and for myself. Editing for Hakai has been a dream.

Such a devastating loss for in-depth climate journalism, in B.C. where Hakai is based, and across the world where their writing resonates. I'm collecting $$$ for beer/beverages for the incredible team at Hakai, following newsroom closure tradition. DM for details if interested!

Very few publications treat their writers (and readers) as well as @hakaimagazine. Not going to call this a huge loss, because it's not over yet. But obviously, very tough news. Undying gratitude to the crack team of editors and writers who run this beautiful ship.

I'm devastated to share the news that @hakaimagazine—a dream publication to work and write for, not to mention read—will stop publishing at the end of 2024. But the team is working hard to keep our coastal journalism alive! Sign up for newsletter updates: hakaimagazine.com/newsletter-sig…

Having a Canadian publication dedicated to covering ocean, climate, and coastal culture/archaeology is so valuable and important! It would be a huge loss for us to not be able to continue in some form. 😢

All of us @hakaimagazine were sad to hear we’d lost our funding. It’s been a true privilege to produce quality science journalism with the loveliest team. (I’ve wanted to work here since @KatherineRCook’s @UVicAnthro class!) We’re not dead yet! The search for new funding is on!
Hakai Magazine@hakaimagazine

The bad news is out: Hakai Magazine is shutting down at the end of 2024. We’re incredibly sad, but our team is proud of the great work we’ve done these past 10 years. We have 5 more months of beautiful and unique coastal stories to come. More info here: mailchi.mp/hakaimagazine/…

I’m so sorry to hear about @hakaimagazine shuttering. Their reporting is delightful to read, I’ve heard writers rave about working with them and - let’s face it - Canadian journalism needs MORE funding, not less. That said, I look forward to what the Hakai team does next!
