@stargazermellu A lot of the living in the now is a symptom of being unable to believe in living for the future. Having kids is a dream, but that requires stability that's so hard to find.

@stargazermellu I think part of it is just - people aren't making long term plans because it's hard to do so with this much instability. I want to play for 60+! But at the same time - what will the world even look like in that time?

cw: death, disappointing take as i get older, more and more ppl i know are un-aliv*ng instead of reaching life milestones. seeing 4-5 friends die in 7 months is too much heartbreak for me. something has to change about the people i surround myself with.

@mireiEATS @alynokioku I've been running a Jpop idol con (US IdolFes) for 5 years now and yea. More focused cons need to happen, but woof, if you don't get mad lucky like Offkai did it is HARD to make it sustainable.

@alynokioku I think a lot of these really niche spaces are stuck in this mindset of "there just aren't enough people interested to support it..." and it stifles growth. I see events like offkai and touhoucon and tbqh the /mlp/ pony cons and think otherwise lol.

i feel like a lot of issues at least that i personally have with the general overseas otaku subculture scene has its roots in people not having enough faith in their niche to let it stand on its own merits...idk if anyone else knows what i mean but i think anime cons like...

@Amina_io @PeachHipped There's def plenty of fan stuff to do at AX - but the difference IMO is midwest cons still largely feel like an outgrowth of the hotel circuit, and yea, AX hasn't had that for ages. But with the new wave of anime fans that 'hotel con' vibe is harder and harder to find.

@PeachHipped My first exposure to fan convention culture was in the Midwest. So, Anime Expo has always struck me as something else entirely. I've grown out of the con scene too but I never thought of AX as a convention. Even 15 years ago felt like an industry trade show.

I spoke to my therapist a little while ago about anime and cons and how I lost interest in going. They put it in a way, saying a lot of older people who attended cons and got into anime viewed it as a subculture, while a lot of people more recently view it as just a hobby.

@emperortoho @axiermundi Well, I mean, where I'm going is like - without Miku Fine wins anyhow, so I guess it was a 'what if Miku wasn't present for Season X' if that makes sense. Like if Miku is lost ater S4 before S5, kind of thing.

@emperortoho @axiermundi Oh absolutely. I mean, my fav moment in S1 is Literally Everyone but Miku Supports Hibiki > Still getting overwhelmed by Durandal. Miku comes in with the HIBIKIIIIIIIII and boom, Hibiki instantly gains control and saves the world.

@sayaduck @rdrisms It's the eternal gatekeeping argument; to have a scene, you have to gatekeep / have exclusivity. I just hope the original crowd can find a new place. I miss the old vibe of friends chilling out together.
