Think billions of horny teens. Last cicada-orgy, I was with Vera Rubin, pioneer of dark matter, as cicadas pummeled the screen door, and her slightly radioactive husband set off alarms at the White House. Cicadas will always remind me of brilliant, kind, fascinating, dear Vera.

I so enjoyed watching 50,000 or so migrating snow geese at #MontezumaWildlifeRefuge, a fabulous spot to behold tall, stately Sandhill Cranes, bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and lots of other winged beauties at the top of Lake Cayuga.

@brainpickings Beautiful. Thanks for this. When I was a Freshman at BU, I always had a collected Dylan Thomas in my pocket. Didn’t know then the circumstances of his death, which are heartbreaking. Such a lush, tintinnabulating gift.

"Life is really a plural noun, a caravan of selves." --@DianeSAckerman. In Hebrew, life is literally a plural noun. Still, go reinvent your self, today's as good a day as any :)

@ThaliaGoldstein Thanks Thalia! Reminds me of the course of mine you were in, on creativity in the arts and sciences. That was fun! Hope you’re doing well. 💚

This vivid description of creativity struck me this morning. From @DianeSAckerman 's lovely 2011 book "One Hundred Names for Love." Will be the intro for #gmupsyc335 today

This Snowy Owl is such a magnificent creature! Been visiting him regularly at a rural airport where he winters, just to quietly behold him. Yesterday, alas, he was gone, driven off by a mob of crows. I'm so hoping he'll forget their bother-squad and return. What a winged beauty!

@Phantasmaphile Aw, thank you so much, Pam; that’s wonderful to hear. I’m so glad my “Senses” still speaks to you, and that our paths crossed when you were in middle school!

Congratulations @brainpicker!! What a heartfull, gorgeous children's book! Can't wait to send a copy to a young friend. I love snails and their cupid-like "love darts," but one needn't, or even be a child, to relish this wise, timely, loving, and sumptuously-told story. 🐌🐌🐌
The Marginalian (formerly Brain Pickings)@brainpickings

I have written a children's book. It is a true story — a love story, a science story, a story about the poetry of existence, about time and chance, genetics and gender, evolution and infinity, about diversity as nature’s wellspring of resilience and beauty brainpickings.org/2021/01/02/the…

I love "Smeyes!" Here are a few: "Coronials"-- generation conceived during pandemic. "Covideo"-- Zoom watching TV with a friend. "Blursday"-- The only correct answer to "What day is it?" "Doom-scrolling"-- Obsessively rereading bad news. "Before-time"-- Pre-pandemic days. More?
Natalie Batalha (@[email protected])@nbatalha

And so it begins... the great hunt (pandemic-style) for a gown worthy of the love and partnership of N & A. Just before snapping the photo, the youngsters shouted “smeyes!” which, I learned, means “smile with your eyes.” What other new words are emerging from the pandemic?
