In general, I do think women have it harder than men; however, there is a specific way in which men currently have it much harder in my perception: men are much more societally trapped in their gender roles and expectations. These roles are enforced by both men and women, and they largely stem from misogyny: the belief, often implicit, that feminine-coded things are lesser. Feminists have rightly paved the way for women to exist in traditionally masculine roles and spaces, but men are still much less free to exist in traditionally feminine ones, or to exhibit traditionally feminine characteristics. I’m not pointing out this imbalance to advocate for eliminating gendered categories, but to argue for loosening the social enforcement of rigid gender norms. That alone could alleviate a tremendous amount of anxiety and suffering. The more men and women are seen as people with their own individual characteristics, the better.
