@DawnAstle9 You do concentrate on professional players but amateur players did play tens of 1000s of hours too of heading the balls too, I used to play 2 full games every weekend, sometimes 3, from a young age till about 38. Especially as a centre half, more lumping up it at that level too.

From our launch on 11th April 2015 on ‘Astle Day’ at West Bromwich Albion it’s been one hell of a journey. A lonely journey at times, a frustrating journey at times, a sad journey, but a journey we had to take. Giving up was never an option. I guess , on paper, it’s seems easy. To look after all those players affected by neuro degenerative diseases and do what we can to stop this happening to players in the future. But it was never going to be easy. We are incredibly proud of everything our Justice for Jeff and #dementiainfootball campaign has achieved so far. Proud that although brain disease robbed my Dad of his life far too soon, it gave us, his family , the strength and the ability to start the discussions around dementia in the game, to push for education for current players, to impact sports medicine and to advocate for player safety, which is of course paramount. We now have research proving that our former professional footballers are 3.5 times more likely to have dementia than non footballers. We have had acknowledgement from football stakeholders. We have a Football Brain Health Support Fund in place. We have education on concussion and the risks associated with repetitive head impacts ( heading ) for all professional players. We have concussion substitutes We have clinics and research in place to give us a better understanding of Brain Health in players in their 30’s 40’s and 50’s. We have guidance in place around the amount of heading a professional does in training per week. We have a dedicated Brain Health department at the PFA with staff who have lived experience of both dementia and traumatic brain injury. More recently, we now have heading footballs completely removed from the game for our youngest of children. Is there more to do, absolutely. We will continue to push for #dementiainfootball to be officially recognised as an Industrial Disease. We will continue to push for the heading in training guidance to be strengthened to a regulation. We will push for more research to try and find a way to diagnose #CTE in the living. And we will always be the voice for all those unable to speak for themselves anymore. We’ve met some incredible people along this journey, and their friendship and support has been invaluable to us, as have our incredible Trustees and Patrons. Thankyou. But mostly, the support from football fans from all corners of the country, especially those of West Bromwich Albion. Their love and loyalty to my Dad and to my family never ceases to amaze me. And if I were to thank them every day of my life for the rest of my life it still wouldn’t be enough. Finally, to my Dad. I love and miss you every second of every day, I always will.
