Every so often we get an announcement from 2 of the big AEC vendors about how they have signed an agreement to work closer together on #interoperability. Sadly though to date they are all marketing headlines and all of them have resulted in no significant substance.

Big admission from Grace Grace on @abcbrisbane that Brisbane will still need a new oval stadium after 2032, but that’s a matter for “future governments”. That’ll be a $3+ billion stadium spend with no IOC/Fed funding, no Olympic moment, and billions wasted along the way.

I am excited to announce the launch of my new website. A lot has been going on, on the Architecture side of my business over the last 4.5 years, and now I feel I have enough projects for the website to stand up for itself Visit the new website here: skewed.com.au

I recently wrote an article for the BIM Coordinators Summit on how the industry has not implemented BIM well enough. We need to adapt our processes to enable technology to provide us with the benefits we seek. issuu.com/bimcoordinator…

@DigitalNath Hey I never claimed to be a Digital Engineer. I'm sticking with BIM Manager. I also never claimed I was cool.

It's Friday afternoon and it is time for my final BIM Rant. For now... I thought I would leave my most controversial post for the final post. There is no such thing as Digital Engineering! It is made up... Have a great weekend everyone! youtu.be/-yzhhG8pa24

@DigitalNath You could say that. You could also say that BIM managers and Digital Engineers are performing the exact same role. But in a company of many different engineering types, you may be managing all the disciplines and you wouldn't just say your a general engineer. Not as cool 😎

@Matt_BIMflow At the end of the day it is only technology being plugged into other roles that already exist. Yes because of tech you may become more capable but it doesn’t change that it is either Engineering / Architecture or Model / Information Management.

@DigitalNath ...and the irony is that through BIM management I can do more engineering-like tasks so in that regard, digital engineering is not so inappropriate and could be seen as another evolution/specialisation of construction engineering.

@Matt_BIMflow Do you think though moving into the future with sustainability being a larger driver rather than cheaper, performance may become more important once again?

@DigitalNath I was very surprised and disappointed to discover how different construction engineering was from what we were taught where we learnt to calculate for optimized solutions. Now you have "no performance solutions" criteria which is basically stating that you can't do engineering...

@Matt_BIMflow By having specialisations it is just demonstrating the complexity that exists in the delivery of built assets. It is why Architects tend to stick to only a few building types.

@DigitalNath "Engineering" as a profession is a relatively new term historically which evolved from what was basically blacksmiths and inventors and Architects. When you study it, there's lots of maths and applied science. Now it has branched into a bazillion specialties and has less meaning.

@thebimguru It is the same with Digital Twins taking on a portion of BIM uses and claiming them as theirs. All about rebranding. I hope my rants are helping educate with some humour and lightheartedness.

@thebimguru Or does it? I see it as product placement. A new role type that is generated might be sold at a higher fee rate? They are doing the same thing, but call it something new and improved and it can be charged at a higher rate.

@thebimguru Challenging some ways, but others not. I feel I will be the only person to speak out about it and be the black sheep. The majority of the people performing the roles aren’t Engineers. And it isn’t a form of Engineering. It is Information Management, Model Managment etc.
