Delighted to announce our new website hiddenheritages.ai/en. The Decoding Hidden Heritages project brings together over 5,500 folktales from manuscript and printed sources. It really is a treasure trove of stories in Gàidhlig, Irish and English. @HumanitiesDCU @FiontarGaeilge

@KristerVasshus @HakonBlystad Perhaps they learnt as they settled abroad. There are several Aptot (= OSc. Abildtoft) and Prétot (= OSc. Peretoft) place-names of Scandinavian origin in Normandy. And the word pere is hardly anything but a loanword in Scandinavian.

@HakonBlystad Other than scholarly caution, absolutely not. The Scandinavian words for apples indicate presence before ca 700 AD. Medieval laws in Scandinavia regulate bee keeping. People also had taste buds in the Viking age, so not herbing your food up from the kitchen garden would be silly

Things I am (close to) convinced about, although we don't have (much) archaeological evidence about it (to the best of my knowledge): Viking age Scandinavians cultivated fruit trees like apples and plums. They kept bees for wax and honey. Their kitchen gardens were great.

They do innovative stuff here at the Sámi allaskuvla/Sámi University of Applied Sciences. When teaching geographical names, the students design course materials and games. We can all learn from this! @samiallaskuvla @Samediggi @kartverket @sprakradet @UiB_UB @UNSD_GEGN

Gamifying geographical names! The Coordination Meeting covers many diverse subjects, also teaching. UNGEGN expert Maria Louise Sara developed this excellent game as part of her course in geographical names. @Samediggi @Kartverket @sprakradet
