Has Google just quietly announced SGE isn't going to happen? New AI search updates include this coded language at the bottom. "we'll continue to offer SGE in Labs as a testbed for bold new ideas" The wording "continue to offer".. "in labs" seems to show a move-forward state of affairs. SGE connected to testbed feels like a comment on SGE not being ready for the big-time, nor that it is ever expected to ever be. "But our goal is to make AI helpful for everyone, not just early adopters." This also seems like a comment on SGE's lack of permanence and that it is imperfect around the edges as most products for early adopters are. "To try out the latest capabilities we’re testing, enroll in Search Labs (where available) and opt into the SGE experiment." This language makes SGE sound like it is a breeding ground for many different SERP features, instead of an all-encompassing one that we first saw when it was announced. This seems like the most realistic state of affairs/final product. Bits and pieces of SGE may see the big time, but it seems unlikely the product we saw on every search result last year will get there any time soon. Am I reading too far into it? Possibly. But we know these words are carefully chosen, and we also know Google is unlikely to announce things one way or another if things skew negative. This may be as close as we get to some understanding about how the next six months may look.
