Using @INV3_Math , 4th graders are creating a deck of 40 fraction cards that each evidence fraction numeracy using visual representations and equivalency. Deep math talk + working collaboratively= a whole lot of learning success✅ @HES1929 @SosnovskyHES

@JSerravallo After a mini lesson, prior to them “doing the work,” we engage in a metacognitive routine where they identify their level of understanding and ability to be successful w/ the task. It empowers them to take active ownership over their learning.

Hey teachers! I'd love to hear from you about something you've modified in your classroom this year that has had a positive impact. Whether it's a new seating arrangement, a different approach to a lesson, a specific strategy, or anything else, I'd love to hear about it!

@JSerravallo Anything by Kate DiCamillo especially The Tiger Rising and The Tale of Despereaux yields deep reflective conversation. We also adored Joe from Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan! Maribeth Boelts picture book: A Bike Like Sergio‘s leads to a fantastic discussion.

Routines to Build Reading Community: Every time we gather as a group of readers we sit in stillness for several minutes reading our independent books beside one another creating a reading energy that then allows us to be ready for new learning, PRIOR to the mini lesson. @HES1929

I teach a reading group a strategy for deeper comprehension, then I step away availing a student in the group to continue leading the lesson. Total engagement, ownership, yielded from instruction focused on building a literacy identity. Less me,more them. @HES1929 @SosnovskyHES

Reading partners referencing my small group reading binder of anecdotal notes of them. Making reading instruction transparent builds community, cultivates literate identity, &engages ownership in learning. “She taught us this so remember to try it today.” @HES1929 @SosnovskyHES

The work of literary essay is layered w/a synthesis of literacy & self management skills. We push ourselves to say something remarkable yet grounded in text evidence about various complex short stories. Expectations were high but our thoughts were deep! @HES1929 @TCAdvancingLit
