🕯️ Tenebrae Service at Holy Family Cathedral ✨Tenebrae - March 29, 2026 7:30pm Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion Holy Family Cathedral Join us for the ancient and moving liturgy of Tenebrae (Latin for “darkness”), a prayerful reflection traditionally associated with the final days of Holy Week. During this solemn service, the three great Passover Psalms (22, 51, and 55) and the Lamentations of Jeremiah are chanted as the cathedral gradually grows darker. One by one, fourteen candles are extinguished, drawing the faithful into the deepening mystery of Christ’s Passion. At the end of the service, the Christ Candle remains burning before being removed, while a sudden sound known as the strepitus echoes through the church - symbolizing the moment of Christ’s death and His descent into the tomb. Come experience this powerful tradition of prayer as we enter more deeply into the mystery of Holy Week.

✨Chrism Mass at Holy Family Cathedral with Bishop Konderla. The Chrism Mass takes its name from the blessing of the holy oils used in the sacraments throughout the year, which are then given to priests to take back to their parishes. During the part of the Chrism Mass called the Rite of Reception of the Oils, representatives from every diocesan parish receive the three oils. This signifies each parish's unity with their bishop. 🎉 Celebrating 10 Years of Episcopal Ministry Ten years ago this month, Pope Francis ordained Tulsa native Archbishop Peter Wells a bishop. A priest of the Diocese of Tulsa, Archbishop Wells has served the Church around the world - from Nigeria to South Africa, and now as Apostolic Nuncio to Thailand and Cambodia and Apostolic Delegate to Laos. Ordained a priest in Tulsa in 1991, he has faithfully served under multiple popes, including Pope Saint John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. ✨Sunday Spotlight: Our Seminarians✨ From the Office of Vocations Through prayer, study, and formation, our seminarians are preparing to serve Christ and His people. Each Sunday, we invite you to get to know them - and to support them with your prayers. 👉Now meet Jim Southard! Jim Southard shares that during Lent he tries to be especially attentive to the Fridays of the season. By fasting and then attending the Stations of the Cross later in the day, even the small discomforts remind him of the immense suffering Christ endured for us. He also enjoys how Lent brings people together through devotions and community gatherings, whether for Stations of the Cross or a parish fish fry. Holy Thursday is particularly meaningful to him, as the liturgy beautifully unfolds the beginning of the Easter Triduum - moving from the celebration of the Lord’s Supper to the solemn moment when the Blessed Sacrament is taken away and the church is stripped, preparing us for Good Friday. Jim first began thinking about the priesthood about ten years ago, though his initial reaction was that he could never be holy enough for such a calling. Over time, he came to realize that God often calls imperfect people to carry out His mission. Daily Mass, praying the Rosary, and spending time with Our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration played an important role in his discernment, along with guidance and encouragement from the diocesan Vocations Office. One of his favorite moments at Mass is the Eucharistic Prayer, where the priest stands as an intermediary between God and His people. He also treasures praying Night Prayer (Compline) in the evening, using the built-in examination of conscience as an opportunity to reflect on the day and recognize God’s presence. And a few fun facts about Jim: he enjoys a classic fish and fries for a Lenten meal and counts deep-dish pizza among his favorite foods. His musical tastes range widely - from Catholic lo-fi while studying to bands like Pink Floyd, Rush, bluegrass favorites like the Steep Canyon Rangers, and the band Cannons. He recently enjoyed the novel Plainsong by Kent Haruf and appreciates the spiritual wisdom of Audi, Filia by St. John of Avila. Eight Parishes to Participate in Holy Thursday Pilgrimage Set for Night of April 2 This year's Holy Thursday Pilgrimage - formerly "Seven Churches Pilgrimage" - will take place on the night of April 2, at eight Tulsa parishes. "Over the past few years, our parishes have partnered to offer a Seven Churches Pilgrimage on the evening of Holy Thursday," says Fr. Steven Ditzel, Parochial Vicar at the Parish of Christ the King in Tulsa. "I have found this to be a beautiful expression of the Catholic community in Tulsa. It provides a unique opportunity for our parishioners to come together in adoration of our Lord and to experience the beauty of each of our parishes." Pilgrims can choose to attend one or several of the eight participating churches that will hold Adoration that night. Unless otherwise noted, each of this year's eight participating parishes will have an altar of repose available for pilgrims to come and pray before the Blessed Sacrament from approximately 8 p.m. until midnight. Altar of repose start times may vary slightly due to the length of each parish's respective In Coena Domini Mass. For instance, St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church will close at 11 p.m. The eight participating parishes with additional location or time information are: • Church of Saint Mary (Altar of repose will be located in St. Joseph Parish Hall) • Church of the Madalene • Holy Family Cathedral • Parish of Christ the King (Altar of repose will be located in Mary, Queen of Peace Chapel) • St. Bernard of Clairvaux - 7:30 - 11p.m. (Altar of Repose in the Good Shepherd Chapel) • St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church - 8:30 p.m. - midnight • St. Philip Neri University Parish • St. Pius X Catholic Church - 6:30 p.m. - midnight
