🕯️ Tenebrae Service at Holy Family Cathedral
✨Tenebrae - March 29, 2026
7:30pm
Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion
Holy Family Cathedral
Join us for the ancient and moving liturgy of Tenebrae (Latin for “darkness”), a prayerful reflection traditionally associated with the final days of Holy Week.
During this solemn service, the three great Passover Psalms (22, 51, and 55) and the Lamentations of Jeremiah are chanted as the cathedral gradually grows darker. One by one, fourteen candles are extinguished, drawing the faithful into the deepening mystery of Christ’s Passion.
At the end of the service, the Christ Candle remains burning before being removed, while a sudden sound known as the strepitus echoes through the church - symbolizing the moment of Christ’s death and His descent into the tomb.
Come experience this powerful tradition of prayer as we enter more deeply into the mystery of Holy Week.
