Theism is the belief that God exists. If atheism is, "simply the absence of theism", then it would mean that atheism is the belief that God does not exist, which is a positive truth claim about reality. Perhaps you want to specify whether you are affirming weak or strong atheism?

@MartinTweats You literally cannot comprehend the words that you are reading. Atheism is an absence of theism. In other, very simple words, atheism means you are unconvinced of the existence of any gods. To be EVEN MORE CLEAR, we have no reason to believe god exists, or does not exist.

It goes both ways. If a theist claims, "God exists", then they have made a truth claim about reality; thus, the onus is on them to prove their claim. If an atheist claims, "God does not exist", then they have made a truth claim about reality; thus, the onus is on them to prove their claim.
