Chandler Levack is a Canadian filmmaker from Montreal. Her previous film I Like Movies broke out at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and was called one of the sharpest comedies about film obsession ever made. She went from TIFF breakout to SXSW headliner in 3 years. Mile End Kicks premiered at SXSW 2026 starring Barbie Ferreira — her first major film role since departing Euphoria. Ferreira did not leave Euphoria for a Marvel film or a Netflix franchise. She went to Montreal for a Canadian indie. Levack is making work about people who do not fit in. Ferreira IS that person. Canadian cinema is having its moment — from Chandler Levack to Denis Villeneuve, the north makes films with something to say. #ChandlerLevack #MileEndKicks #SXSW2026 #CanadianCinema #BarbieFerreira

On this day in 1985, Amadeus made history at the Academy Awards. Amadeus won 8 of 11 nominations. The film depicted Mozart's life through the jealous eyes of Salieri, earning $90 million worldwide. It was Forman's second Best Director win, following One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1976). (Originally March 25, 1985.) #MilosForman #Amadeus #OnThisDay #FilmHistory #FilmDirecting #Cinema

Zero Dark Thirty's bin Laden raid runs 25 minutes in near-darkness with whispered commands. Bigelow used real night-vision aesthetic—no movie lighting. No score. Just boots on floor and breathing. She embedded with SEALs for research. 'Procedural accuracy creates tension better

"If there's specific resistance to women making movies, I just choose to ignore that as an obstacle for two reasons: I can't change my gender, and I refuse to stop making movies." - Kathryn Bigelow. Bigelow on navigating gender discrimination in Hollywood — a statement that became even more resonant when she became the first woman to win Best Director at the Oscars for The Hurt Locker. #KathrynBigelow #FilmDirecting #Cinema #FilmQuotes #Director

Allen pivoted from comedy to Bergman. Shot it like a funeral. Put Keaton at the center of something she'd never done. Interiors, 1978. Cold compositions. Muted palette. Gordon Willis lit it like a Scandinavian winter. Allen gave Keaton no comedic protection — just raw dramatic

BONG JOON-HO'S 4 RULES OF STORYBOARDING 1. Every frame is pre-drawn — improvisation happens within the storyboard, not instead of it 2. The storyboard is a conversation with your crew, not a cage 3. Draw the frame you want, then find out if it's possible — never the reverse 4. The audience's eye must always know exactly where to look Source: Parasite production interviews (2019); Cannes Film Festival press conference #BongJoonho #FilmDirecting #Cinema #DirectingMasterclass #Filmmaking

Boots Riley has made 2 films. Both premiered at SXSW. Both starred LaKeith Stanfield. Both were anti-capitalist satire with surrealist twists. Sorry to Bother You in 2018 had horse people. I Love Boosters in 2026 has teleportation. Different films, same soul. Riley wrote both himself. Same Oakland Bay Area setting. Same belief that workers can change the world. Critics at SXSW 2026 called I Love Boosters "the vibe of 2026." Between features, Riley made I Am a Virgo on Amazon Prime in 2023 — a superhero series that was really about policing. Even his TV was political. Even his downtime was radical. He started as a rapper fronting The Coup. He is now one of the most distinctive directors working. This is what cinema looks like when it is made by someone who lived outside the system. #BootsRiley #AntiCapitalistCinema #SXSW2026 #IndependentFilm #OccupyCinema

The wisdom dropped here is profound. That realization that every story teaches you something new about the craft *and* yourself is the real prize of filmmaking. It’s not about crazy camera stunts (though some exist!); it’s the dedicated challenge of embodying a character

Mike Nichols put the toughest actor in Hollywood inside a drag club comedy and told him to play it straight. That's the whole joke. The Birdcage, 1996. Nichols cast Hackman as a right-wing senator attending dinner at Robin Williams and Nathan Lane's establishment. Hackman's job:

VILLENEUVE'S 5 RULES OF WORLD-BUILDING 1. Silence is the first tool of world-building — let the world breathe 2. Research until the world feels inevitable, not invented 3. Every prop, texture, and costume must carry the weight of history 4. The audience must feel they've only seen a fraction of this world 5. Build the world for the actors first — then for the camera Source: Variety; The Hollywood Reporter (Dune, 2021; Blade Runner 2049, 2017) #DenisVilleneuve #FilmDirecting #Cinema #DirectingMasterclass #Filmmaking

Ramsay cut away from nearly every violent act in You Were Never Really Here. We see Joaquin Phoenix approach. We see what's left. Never the act. The security footage scene—where we see but don't hear—inverts this: now we're complicit in surveillance. Ramsay strips genre tropes

Boots Riley waited 8 years between features. Sorry to Bother You premiered at SXSW in 2018, changed indie cinema, then silence. In 2026, he opened SXSW's 40th anniversary edition with I Love Boosters — starring Keke Palmer, LaKeith Stanfield, Don Cheadle, Demi Moore, and Taylour Paige. A crew of shoplifters called the Velvet Gang targets a fashion mogul. With sci-fi twists. The film's title references a 2006 Coup song Riley wrote 20 years ago. He named his movie after his own music. That is Boots Riley. I Love Boosters releases in theaters May 22, 2026. Riley is a rapper first — he fronts Oakland hip-hop group The Coup. He made his second feature after 8 years of silence because he had something to say. If you missed Sorry to Bother You in 2018, you are about to get a second chance to discover the most politically dangerous filmmaker in Hollywood. #FilmDirecting #BootsRiley #SXSW2026 #IndieFilm #ILoveBoosters
