Further analysis reveals that people (typically men) like my analysis/views on: - Private Military Companies - AI and geopolitics/nat sec - Asia observations - British foreign policy and strategy Anyway, I will continue to use 5-10% of this account for talking about whatever fascinates me at the moment, and also for finding a date. Strap in!
Sam@Discoplomacy

Just under 90% of my new followers over the last three months are men, most of whom are probably between the ages of 25-44 years old. The hunt for a wife #continues

We should just ban the term “wake up call” from British political lingo. It’s as useless as “let me clear”. Indicates that whatever is about to follow has either been raised one million times before in the case of the former, or is about to be total slop in the latter.

Q: "Why didn't you tell U.S. allies…about the war before attacking Iran?" President Trump: "We wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?"

It’s sad that people have tried to frame the young Rama Duwaji as a anti-white thirdworldist when she was very clearly and endearingly cringe late Millennial

I suspect Polanski will be the most critical of AI in the next election of all the parties, partly based on misconceptions around environmental concerns, and partly due to perceived job losses. I also expect he will take a very populist approach to how he discusses it, unless we see a miracle breakthrough between now and then.

.@paul_conyngham says when he asked ChatGPT how to make a drug to treat his dog’s cancer, it told him to contact a specific DNA sequencing expert: computational biologist Martin Smith. Smith ended up playing a critical role in helping develop a personalized mRNA vaccine for her.
Greg Brockman@gdb

How AI empowered Paul Conyngham to create a custom mRNA vaccine to cure his dog’s cancer when she had only months to live. The first personalized cancer vaccine designed for a dog:

@iainmartin1 “Renewables are often reliant on Chinese technology and kit, a major risk given what is actually happening in the world.” Fair observation. Now what’s the key trade off then? What do you want/think should happen?

I mean, sure. But can we start having an honest national conversation about trade offs and vulnerabilities? Renewables are often reliant on Chinese technology and kit, a major risk given what is actually happening in the world.

“A wake up call” the CEO of Britain’s biggest domestic energy firm told me last night about the possibility of long term impact to global gas and oil infrastructure… but he pointed to electrification as the main lesson, while domestic gas would be preferable to shipped gas:

“wake-up call that gets us to electrify more of our economy and get more of our energy from homegrown sources.”

"The irony is, right now, we're emailing millions of customers saying their energy prices are going to fall..."
"You can't protect yourself against these global markets forever."
"Traders are really worried about how long it's going to take these facilities to get back online."
"Our electricity system's too inefficient. We need to reform that markets so that people get the benefits of our homegrown resources."
“my own view is that shipping gas around the world is more inefficient and has more leaks of methane than if you use local gas. But we shouldn't kid ourselves. North Sea gas wouldn't meaningfully bring the price down because we're paying the global price. If we got more out of the North Sea, it would simply be sold to other countries at these very high prices or here at these high prices. And we can't kid ourselves we're going to be self-sufficient in gas again. What we can do is have a much cheaper approach to electricity than we have today. Our electricity system's too inefficient. We need to reform that markets so that people get the benefits of our homegrown resources.

Also this seems bad. The share of UK graduates from natural sciences, maths, and statistics programmes dropped from 13.4% in 2019 to 8.0% in 2023, knocking the UK from second to fifth among comparators.

Life sciences people: what gives here? British clinical trial approvals are deteriorating sharply. The median time from application to first patient dosed hit 338 days in 2023, up 24% year-on-year, ranking the UK tenth out of ten comparators, and Australia does it in 172 days. gov.uk/government/pub…

Supporting fragile states will be at the heart of the UK’s modern approach to development, the Foreign Secretary will announce today. "Countries with the greatest humanitarian need, including Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, will be prioritised to address harm caused by conflict and global threats. Overall, 70% of all geographic support will be allocated to the most fragile and conflict affected states by 2028/29." Going forward with relationships "based on partnership not paternalism." gov.uk/government/new…
