حسب التفسيرات الجيولوجية، قبل أكثر من 500 مليون سنة، كانت #العلا كان على حافة قارة قديمة، تتداخل فيها بحار ضحلة مع أنهار متشعّبة، حيث تراكمت الرمال عبر زمن طويل ثم دُفنت، وبتأثير عوامل مثل الضغط والحرارة تشكلت الحجارة الرملية. لاحقًا، ومع تحوّلات تكتونية رفعت هذه الطبقات إلى السطح، بدأت عوامل مثل الرياح والمطر والتغيّر الحراري تعمل ببطء وانتقائية؛ تُزيل الأضعف وتُبقي الأصلب… لتبرز الأعمدة والأقواس، وتتشكل صخور العلا المهيبة الفريدة، في عملية نحت لا تزال مستمرة إلى اليوم.
