A riddle about modern Russia: What do serial killer Alexander Pichushkin, who murdered 49 people, and world-renowned mathematician Azat Miftakhov have in common? They are imprisoned in the same facility in Russia. Azat Miftakhov was serving a politically motivated sentence and was due to be released in 2023. Instead, he was immediately re-arrested on new fabricated charges and transferred to the notorious “Polar Owl” (Kharp) prison. It is one of Russia’s harshest prisons, where life-sentenced prisoners and especially dangerous inmates are held. It is the same prison where Alexei Navalny was murdered. Miftakhov has reported being subjected to severe torture starting the day after his arrival. After he refused to clean a toilet for other inmates, he was taken to an office where he was beaten on the soles of his feet with a wooden hammer and electrocuted. He was also threatened with sexual violence. Azat Miftakhov is an outstanding mathematician who continues to solve complex mathematical problems even from behind bars. Leading universities around the world have offered him teaching positions. More than 300 mathematicians have signed a petition calling for his release. Yet in Russia, exceptional talent is not valued, and instead, a brilliant mind is sent beyond the Arctic Circle to rot among murderers and subjected to torture.

Valery Tverdovsky, the owner of Odessa’s long-running Arkadia beach night clubs, Arkadia and Ithaca, gets tear-gassed as he tries to confront recruitment officers hunting for men outside one of the clubs.

Marie-Philip Poulin’s legend only grows, scoring a clutch goal in triple OT tonight for the Montreal Victoire. A 1-0 win on a night where the goalies were terrific — series tied 1-1 against the Minnesota Frost. Montreal hockey on a high.

Apparently Macron made it all the way to Gyumri, Armenia's second largest city and a place that still feels like it's recovering from a devastating 1988 Earthquake. City has changed a lot over the years, but still has a fraction of the population it had in 1987. Here he is next to one of my favorite buildings in the region, the incredibly Goth 19th century Holy Savior's Church.

About as disastrous as it gets for Toronto FC, eliminated in the first round of the Canadian Championship to CPL’s Atlético Ottawa. TFC hasn’t won a fully-fledged CanChamp since 2018, and clearly didn’t take tonight’s squad seriously.

Toronto FC’s young players failed again tonight against Atlético Ottawa. If the Whitecaps relocate, there goes the much more productive academy for #CanMNT — and potentially #CanWNT talent. TFC, MTL, and all CPL clubs simply don’t have that structure that produces top players.

Another outstanding book in our Stanford Ottoman World series: Kristen Alff, Violent Interests: Capitalism and Social Transformation in the Eastern Mediterranean, 1830s–1940s (Stanford University Press, 2026) In Violent Interests, Kristen Alff, Associate Professor at NC State University, traces how Beirut-based business families grew from small partnerships into major shareholder corporations linking the Eastern Mediterranean with Europe. Following networks of people, capital, and ideas from Beirut to Haifa, Alexandria, Liverpool, and London, the book shows how land, labor, gender relations, and regional economies were transformed. Centering war—especially World War I—as a catalyst, Alff argues that late Ottoman Beiruti companies helped embed capitalist accumulation as a lasting social and economic order. @mideaststanford @StanfordHistory @stanfordpress @abbasiprogram sup.org/books/middle-e…
