Patta Singh Chundawat: The Immortal Young Hero of Chittorgarh
Rawat Patta Singh Chundawat (also known as Patta Sisodia, Rawat Patta Chundawat, or Fateh Singh), born around 1551, stands as one of the most revered figures in Rajput history. A young chieftain of the Chundawat clan (an offshoot of the Sisodia dynasty of Mewar), he exemplified extraordinary valor, leadership, and sacrifice at the tender age of 16–17 during the Third Siege of Chittorgarh in 1567–1568. His name remains inseparable from that of his brother-in-law, Rao Jaimal Rathore, in the annals of Mewar’s resistance against Mughal Emperor Akbar.
Early Life and LineagePatta belonged to the prestigious Chundawat branch of the Sisodias, tracing his descent directly from Rawat Chunda Sisodia, the eldest son of Rana Lakha of Mewar, who famously renounced the throne to serve the kingdom. His lineage included warriors who fought and died for Mewar across generations: his grandfather Rawat Siha Ji fell at the Battle of Khanwa (1527) alongside Rana Sanga against Babur; his father, Rawat Jaga, died in battle near Udaipur in 1555; and an uncle, Rawat Naga, perished in the Second Siege of Chittorgarh (1535).
After his father’s death, the four-year-old Patta inherited the jagir of Kailwa (Kelwa). By his teens, he had risen as a trusted sardar under Maharana Udai Singh II. In 1567, as Akbar’s massive army approached Chittorgarh, the Maharana evacuated to Gogunda, leaving the defense of the fort to approximately 8,000–10,000 Rajput warriors under Jaimal Rathore and Patta Chundawat.
The Third Siege of Chittorgarh (1567–1568)Akbar’s forces laid siege to the formidable hill fort for several months. The defenders, led by Jaimal and Patta, mounted a heroic resistance against superior Mughal artillery, cavalry, and war elephants. Patta, though young, commanded key positions and earned renown for his fierce fighting.
As the siege intensified, Jaimal was mortally wounded (legend says by a shot from Akbar’s own gun while observing from the walls). Command devolved to Patta. With no hope of relief and the fort on the verge of falling, the Rajputs prepared for the final Saka (a last, desperate charge) and Jauhar (mass self-immolation by the women to avoid capture).
Patta’s mother, Rani Sajjan Bai Songara Chauhan, and his wife (often named Rani Jiwa Bai Solanki or similar in accounts), along with other women, displayed remarkable courage. Some sources describe the mother and wife donning male attire to fight alongside the men before perishing; others note the women’s unit led by Patta’s wife fighting valiantly before Jauhar. Patta himself donned the saffron kesariya robe, symbolizing readiness to die for honor.
On February 23, 1568, the gates opened for the final sally. Thousands of Rajputs charged out in a frenzy of battle. Patta fought like a lion, cutting through Mughal ranks single-handedly until an elephant charge struck him down. According to the Akbarnama by Abu’l Fazl, Akbar’s forces later found him trampled; when brought before the emperor, he had a breath of life left but soon died. Akbar himself noted the leader’s bravery and the men who sacrificed their lives around him.
Legacy and HonorsPatta’s sacrifice, alongside Jaimal’s, deeply impressed even Akbar. Statues of the two warriors were erected at the gates of the Red Fort in Delhi (and later moved or replicated elsewhere, such as in Bikaner) as a mark of respect for their valor. Cenotaphs and memorials mark the spots where they fell near Rampol in Chittorgarh.
His son, Rawat Kalla (or Karan Singh) Chundawat, continued the family tradition, fighting for Maharana Pratap and dying at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. The family later received the jagir of Amet as recognition of their service.

Vaibhav🔥 is just 15 and already has that killer instinct! Sri Lankans tried to sledge with 'this is international cricket, not IPL' — and the kid shut it down perfectly: 'This is not the end of the tournament, just a normal match.' Pure fire! This is the new India — competitive, fearless, and never backing down. Let the boy cook, he’s got the talent and the attitude. Proud 🇮🇳 #VaibhavSooryavanshi"

It is gladdening to see Indian art and culture become popular globally.
Following the ceremonial welcome this morning, PM Fico and I saw a collection of paintings created by Slovak children from across Slovakia.
Drawing inspiration from the Panchatantra and Jataka tales, the artworks beautifully showcase how India’s ancient wisdom and traditions continue to resonate with younger generations around the world.
