The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered the continued detention of former president Rodrigo Duterte due to persistent risks of flight and obstruction of justice. In an eight-page decision dated May 22, Trial Chamber III ruled that no significant circumstances justify his release. The court emphasized that the confirmation of charges against Duterte last April increases the risk of him absconding. (📷: ICC) | via @eon_sanchez

UCLA just published an AAPI textbook for the TikTok generation (scrollable on phones and tablets). It's free. "Much of the textbook does focus on AAPI history in California, like the Filipino farmworker movement and Vietnamese refugee communities in Orange County. [...] Karen Umemoto, Director of UCLA Asian American Studies Center, said the textbook is for anyone to use as needed, but a major goal is helping educators incorporate AAPI perspectives into existing courses." ~ @LAist newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/aapi-…

"A few hours later, at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, (May 14), Mr. dela Rosa fled the Senate building in Manila, said Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, who oversees the Philippine police force. He added that Mr. dela Rosa had left in a car with another senator, Robin Padilla, and that federal agents were now searching for Mr. dela Rosa." Explore this gift article from The New York Times. Ah. NO! I beg to disagree w this article that says it's the color of ube that paved its way to mainstream USA. If the color purple is the appeal of anything ube, then grape would have been a popular flavor everywhere in the US. But grape is not a popular flavor of anything in many parts of the US that I've visited. It's the savory flavor ("linamnam" in Tagalog, "umami" in Japanese) of UBE -- somewhat nutty and creamy that makes it popular. Try it and you will taste what I mean. And by the way, it's NOT pronounced "oo-bay." it's "oo-beh!" Just shows how poorly researched or dimissive of the culture and language of origin (Filipino) this article is. I just noticed how Forgotten Island’s trailer does not even mention any word in Filipino/Tagalog/Cebuano or any of the PH languages. I’m not talking about dubbing/ captioning—those are a given—but the acknowledgment that this world-making is from a worldview that did not originate from a colonizer’s realm. And what is a more powerful way of acknowledging that than saying the names from that world? Even as we, Filipinos welcome the emerging attention to our pre-colonial cultures, we also have to keep a critical mind-and-eye because it’s one of the things that keep us grounded, connected to our sense of who we are. If we lose that capacity and willingness to question, then how do we stand tall in the midst of other-ness that we experience everyday, in micro and macro doses, in personal and political ways? Not to say that we should be cynical, because even as people can marginalize, we can also embrace, especially when it’s for humanity’s sake, but as any marginalized people in the western-dominated global media, we have to be aware and be vigilant against the over-commercialization and appropriation of our ancestral heritage.
