We're observing two distinct modes of the same phenomenon. Stable (Closed-Loop “Magnetic Bottle”) Mode: An intense, nearly spherical white orb with a bright, luminous stem or tail extending downward into a dark circular base (see your fourth image: the glowing orb against the checkered background). Circular beams conform tightly to the orb’s geometry, producing a contained, plume-like or cloud-like structure. This is an adaptive, self-confined equilibrium — a closed-loop magnetic bottle where the plasma/ions are stably trapped and shaped by the field lines. The tail represents a field-aligned plasma channel or enhanced recombination zone. Visually striking in its symmetry and coherence. Stray-Field (Open-System Perturbative Self-Organisation) Mode: A dynamic, chaotic, and continuously healing structure featuring prominent triangular “wings” or rings (see picture figures). The system exhibits perturbative self-organisation: constantly perturbed by the inhomogeneous stray magnetic field, yet rapidly restructuring. It resembles a sideways vortex or poloidal rotating cyclone. The wings/rings arise directly from differential Lorentz deflection of ion species with different mass-to-charge ratios As the qoute in image 3 states: “The different ‘triangular rings’ (or perhaps better, ‘wings’) are caused by ions with different m/q (Argon and Helium), guided differently in the stray magnetic field of the ion source. The outermost ring represents the lowest ion charge state of the operating gas, here Argon mixed with Helium, presumably m/q. With increasing charge state the ion velocity increases and the effect of the stray magnetic field becomes stronger. Vacuum heat pump is the right analogy. Heat pumps move heat against a gradient using external work; the coefficient of performance exceeds unity because work input doesn't equal heat moved. Parametric vacuum-extraction is the same logic with vacuum modes instead of thermal reservoirs: drive energy in, biased mode-redistribution out, net work extracted exceeds drive only because the geometric asymmetry plays the role of the temperature gradient. Whether COP > 1 is achievable at chip-scale is the empirical question. The thermodynamic framing isn't the blocker; the engineering threshold is the only blocker.
