@DocDifferently @Forbes don't like disability exams. don't want to be a gatekeeper. plus I had a colleague violently stalked and threaten by someone they denied. had to buy a gun and install security. no thanks. couldn't pay me enough to stand between a payday and a grifter

@DocDifferently 💯 I did exactly that. It’s scary. But you are a doctor - not indentured. Portfolio work gives you flexibility and new insights. Might even give you financial independence. Step off the wheel and into autonomy 🙏🏼

“I’m not allowed to go part-time” Yes you are. You’re a doctor. If your current employer won’t agree to your new terms, another one will.

What residency taught me: Clinical pediatrics. What I taught myself: Negotiation, resignation, malpractice insurance, launching an Scorp, contract review, personal finance, finding locums, per-diem rates, expert witness, VA disability, aesthetics, and medical writing.

I became a better doctor when I went part-time. Time, sleep, and joy all came back. I knew it and my patients felt it.

If you are a doctor who is unhappy in your job, nobody is coming to save you. Not your dept chair, medical director, not your colleagues, or friends or family. There are numerous innovative ways for you to change your life & career. Nobody can do this but you, but you CAN do it.

@johnsemalhuis Thanks for sharing. My advice is to be in it for the money while carving hard boundaries around my personal life. It’s ok to take temporary or permanent breaks from anything you no longer enjoy —teaching, clinical medicine, admin, all of the above.

@DocDifferently I work at it . As you say , make it interesting and fun. And don't do anything just for the money. Try and cut out the parts of your speciality that don't appeal to you , if you are able to. And teach, if you can. That's my 2 c worth.

@DocDifferently Also, you’re an adult, nobody SHOULD come and save you. Take your life by the reigns and direct it where you want to go

I used to feel this way, but when I realized that nobody was coming to save me, I saved myself. I found innovative ways to work as a doctor that returned joy, time, and income my life. You are not stuck. Every doctor has career options 💫

Choosing medicine was the worst decision of my life, and I literally pay the price everyday, I have no passion for this soulless joyless field left in me, yet I keep clinging to one wrong decision made years ago on my behalf because I don’t know what else to do

A pediatrician colleague in her 40’s passed away after a short illness. After 15 yrs working at this job: - No email announcement sent from the hospital. - No call made to her family. - No memorial or grief support for the department. - Her job posted for hiring the next week.
