The reason this hits is that it is a beautiful example of how things should be. The importance of various kinds of art just being present for the young, and all of us, everywhere. In stasis, not as frenetic AI slop or reels. So that it imprints deep into us, and we make it come alive within ourselves. Which will make for much better art and, yes, videos and use of AI when some of them grow up.

I was obsessed with this painting as a ten year old. We had it as a poster in my art class. I used to have dreams about it

The original post was, likely according to Grok, citing Lon L. Fuller’s The Morality of Law (Yale University Press, 1964, p. 185), where Fuller writes: “As Thomas Aquinas remarked long ago, if the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever" citing the bit from the Summa above. That's a very interesting book to check out, at any rate, and the paraphrase is just as good or better than the original at getting the point across.

It's worth looking at the original source of this excellent bit from @BonesawMD. It's from the Summa Theologiae, Prima Secundae (I-II), Question 2, Article 5 (“Whether man’s happiness consists in any bodily good?”), in the body of the article (in corpore / respondeo): “Unde gubernator non intendit, sicut ultimum finem, conservationem navis sibi commissae; eo quod navis ad aliud ordinatur sicut ad finem, scilicet ad navigandum.” “Hence a captain does not intend as a last end, the preservation of the ship entrusted to him, since a ship is ordained to something else as its end, viz. to navigation.” It's not directly about a ship or a captain, or leading an organization, although it applies to all that. It's about YOU, and what will make YOU happy in this crazy life. You are made for something greater than merely preserving your bodily health. Aquinas continues: "Now just as the ship is entrusted to the captain that he may steer its course, so man is given over to his will and reason; according to Sirach 15:14: 'God made man from the beginning and left him in the hand of his own counsel.' Now it is evident that man is ordained to something as his end: since man is not the supreme good. Therefore the last end of man's reason and will cannot be the preservation of man's being." Your ship is your body. To where and what are you going to steer your course? Where are you going to sail?

Outside church and family, you have two institutions to directly produce and shape excellent human beings and worthy citizens: education and media. In different ways, the people who run those institutions must share that overarching vision towards truth and beauty. They don’t.

@docMJP Videos increase trust. They see your face and hear your voice. Writing is good, but video is a strong trust amplifier. (Human's are wired for facial recognition, etc.)
