@alexthechick If that had been an option during covid, I would have been less grumpy about mask mania.

Considering how poll-happy our society is, it's odd that no one seems to have made a serious effort to study whether badmouthing from online influencers has actually killed a movie, videogame, or TV show that would otherwise have found a solid audience.

According to the media, Iran gets stronger with every staggering defeat, so in a few weeks there will only be one IRGC soldier left, but he'll be more lethal than John Wick. He'll be shooting Hellfire missiles out of the air with a BB gun.

The transition from blogs, to social media, to podcasting and TikTok videos brought a steep decline in the quality of thought, and it created an audience more interested in quick jolts of white-hot outrage than serious discourse or witty writing.

Smart and well reasoned by @mattvanswol - he’s not personal. He’s speaking broadly about what’s happening in media and it’s 100% accurate.

Funny how none of our courageous and diligent media firefighters, fact-checkers, and gatekeepers of truth seem interested in refuting the latest Democrat disinformation campaign by reminding their audience that U.S. troops have been served surf-and-turf meals for decades.

@sabrdance In fact, regarding Clair Obscur, I'd say the Male Gaze did not taste the slightest hint of defeat - and wasn't there a bit of hand-wringing in the gaming press about that?

@sabrdance True, but Clair Obscur also didn't go out of its way to repel anyone. The designers weren't giving interviews bragging about how they defeated the male gaze or saying "this game might not be for you." String of big indie successes lately that were just plain good fun.

I think it is slightly different. Pitching exclusively to your base of players can also backfire horribly -audience capture is a thing, so is sequelitis. Further, Clair Obscur took the world by storm but lacks the characteristics of a "white male base" game.

The weird adversarial relationship between pop culture producers - movies, videogames, comic books - and the audience became inevitable once those companies made a political decision not to create or market content for their largest customer base, straight white males.

There's an old saying that a good salesman can sell sand to the Arabs and ice to the Eskimos. Well, no salesman is good enough to make money by spending tens of millions of dollars to sell premium nuggets of ideology that are as common as sand and ice to a niche audience. /end

You don't need to pay for expensive tickets and concessions and devote an evening to hearing Maggie Gyllenhaal's primal scream of Trump Derangement Syndrome and misanthropy. You can get it for free, instantly, from a thousand social media accounts.
