@PolyannaBrey @WOOLWORTHS_SA South Africa had 1500 liquidations in the past 12 months 200 from January to February this year

The most informative article on the split between @WOOLWORTHS_SA and Beyers Chocolate.
Was this really unavoidable, since the impact is huge, and has led to the liquidation of Beyers?

The South African government has treated the crypto community like criminals for the last 10 years.
Some of the best builders in crypto were South Africans who had to migrate elsewhere just to get support. Those who could not afford to leave were destroyed.
Too many citizens have had their bank accounts closed or frozen simply for participating in “crypto activities.”
Bitcoin has been the poor man’s lifeboat in South Africa. A peaceful protest against irresponsible governments.
So many people escaped poverty because of Bitcoin. Now, their own government wants to destroy them too.
Satoshi was right.

The regulations would effectively kill self-custody of bitcoin in SA, potentially criminalising those who want to opt out of the state-controlled financial system.

Cant and self-righteousness are de rigueur at events like the “Global Progressive Mobilization Plenary.” South African President Ramaphosa’s speech strictly adhered to tradition. Some of the funniest moments:
--He decries inequality and poverty, speaks of protecting workers, and says money spent on illegal wars should be used for building hospitals and schools. Yet he presides over a government and party that are comprehensively corrupt and steal money from some of the world’s poorest people, to the great detriment of his country’s health care and educational systems.
--He flatters his audience for “showing those who are powerful that you will not be cowed,” as if he and other speakers are not among the powerful. It’s a great glimpse into the third-worldist philosophy that it is only the West that wields power negatively. The developing world, by contrast, is only ever resisting the West’s malign power, even when it is unleashing horrors on its own and other people.
--Relatedly, he condemns wars of aggression and says the UNSC is toothless (correct) because some of its members are undermining the global order. It’s safe to assume he was referring to the US here while pretending Russia hasn’t invaded Ukraine and Georgia and that China hasn’t invaded its neighbors’ waters in the South China Sea. Again, the “moral” standard anti-Western ideologues use only ever condemns in one direction because it isn’t grounded in genuine morality. It is grounded in fighting the West by hook or by crook.
--He frequently speaks of democracy and laments the violation of human rights around the world, yet his government and party support many of the globe’s most aggressively anti-democratic and abusive regimes like those in China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela.
--His first invocation of Palestine sparks by far the biggest response despite his speech also hitting most of the other progressive orthodoxies. Palestine really is the current central dogma of global progressives, in part because they believe it is a potent weapon against the West.
--He (again) congratulates himself and South Africa for taking Israel to the ICJ. SA’s government and the ANC do so frequently, yet the hypocrisy of it still amazes.

I often get accused of having a “pro-Ukraine bias.” Here’s the truth. I am biased.
I’m biased towards freedom, democracy, & human rights. That’s what Ukraine represents right now.
When you document war crimes, you don’t pretend there are “two sides” for balance. You show what is happening. One side is the aggressor. One side is the victim.
If that offends you, you’re morally bankrupt.

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk:
Thirty-five million Russians have no toilet at home.
On the one hand, Russia demands recognition as a "great superpower," claiming the right to redraw state borders by force and impose a new sphere of influence.
Yet, on the other hand, around 35 million Russian citizens still rely on outside toilets — shabby wooden huts in yards and gardens.
Putin wants to convince American mediators and the broader international community that peace itself hinges on Ukraine’s voluntary surrender of the Donetsk region and that, once this demand is met, Russia will at last be happy and eternal peace will follow.
Does anyone seriously believe this fairy tale? We don’t.
What is the purpose of this relentless war of conquest when only about 1 percent of Russia’s vast territory is populated and developed, while the remaining 99 percent are largely neglected and, at best, partially exploited for natural resource extraction?
Moreover, during his 26-year rule, Putin has effectively abandoned his population, many of whom still struggle with the most basic standards of sanitation.
According to official statistical data, one-fourth of Russian households do not have access to centralized sewage systems or indoor sanitation facilities.
In rural areas, the situation is even more severe: in some regions, up to two-thirds of households must rely on outdoor pit latrines.
Let us imagine the scale of the absurdity we are dealing with.
On the one hand, Russia demands recognition as a "great superpower," claiming the right to redraw state borders by force and impose a new sphere of influence.
Yet, on the other hand, around 35 million Russian citizens still rely on outside toilets — shabby wooden huts in yards and gardens.
Let me repeat: thirty-five million Russians have no toilet at home.
This is roughly the population of Malaysia, Poland, or Saudi Arabia and is comparable to the population of Texas, or almost that of California.
Putin wants Russia to be seen as a respected global player while living conditions for a huge part of Russia’s population remain no better than in the early Middle Ages.
This is the true paradox before us: Putin seeks imperial expansion abroad while failing to secure basic human dignity at home - @MelnykAndrij
