On RTÉ this morning Peter Burke said the reason exports of Irish alumina to Russia doubled after the invasion is because European companies refused to continuedoing business with Aughinish, citing 'reputational damage'. Which is not a great look however you spin it.

@FischerKing64 Or, just maybe, people hold Nixon in very low regard because he failed to deliver on every key issue. Crime skyrocketed, every department grew, deficit spending was normalised, he ended the gold standard, Mao’s China was chosen over Taiwan and Watergate was genuinely disgraceful.

The direct result of boomers telling younger people that Nixon was the epitome of evil for decades, while lionizing journalists. I once had lunch with a boomer in a professional setting and made a joke that Nixon was our greatest POTUS. He stared at me like I had just advocated for child sacrifice. I said "I'm kidding." He responded in a solemn tone: "I was waiting for you to say that."

@johnloeber It’s such a strange development. Nixon was one of the most left-wing politicians to serve as President of America, arguably just as much as FDR. He was rude, paranoid, and incompetent on just about every issue. What’s “iconic” about him? Watergate was uniquely bad.

No idea if this is true or false, but a couple quick thoughts: 1. Nixon is anathema to polite liberals of their parents' generation; endorsing him is very rebellious 2. Nixon was a uniquely weird guy, very meme-able 3. After the chaos of the last ten years, Watergate doesn't seem so crazy anymore 4. In light of the last ten years (and specifically all the Trump-directed lawfare), some people are now wondering if Nixon was framed in Watergate. Those people are not necessarily overly political crazies. Sometimes the passage of time clarifies history, sometimes it makes more opaque. I don't know which one it is in this case. 5. Say what you will about Nixon, but he really embodied "you can just do things". He picked things that other people couldn't or wouldn't do -- and did them, all the time. Very aggressively, sometimes successfully. Highly agentic and always with a ton of conviction. I get how that's appealing in our modern time, when lots of people will try to tell you that everything's very complicated and you can't really do anything.

@nixonfoundation The irony of this quote is not lost on me. The most socialist President of America since FDR denouncing socialism when he’s long gone from office. It’s thanks to Nixon that deficit spending, runaway inflation and the use of price controls became the norm, not the exception.

@Noahpinion Based on sheer brutality, it’s Kim Jong Il/Kim Jong Un, unless I’m missing something. Out of the three options, it’s only a race between two and the IRGC beats the Tatmadaw comfortably based on the fact that the Tatmadaw never massacred 40,000 people over a period two weeks.

@Noahpinion I’d love to know why Talaat Pasha, Mengistu Haile Mariam or Filipp Goloshchyokin aren’t on this list. All were just as evil in their intent as the men you listed, and awareness of their brutality needs to be raised. Talaat Pasha, especially, was arguably as bad as Hitler.
