Attention Bitcoin art community. There’s something missing in the conversation around Bitcoin inscriptions that no one is really talking about. Right now, most of what’s being inscribed is driven by novelty, speculation, or resale value. Collections, memes, flips. And that’s fine because every new medium goes through that phase. But if we zoom out, it feels like we’re underestimating what this technology actually makes possible. Throughout history, one of the most effective ways to erase a people has been to erase their culture. Libraries burned. Art destroyed. Languages suppressed. Sacred objects looted or lost. From ancient civilisations to more recent conflicts, the pattern is the same. If you remove the cultural record, you weaken the identity of future generations. Culture survives through preservation. And for the “first time” in history, we now have a tool that can preserve cultural artifacts in a way that is
- decentralised
- censorship resistant
- globally distributed
- and extremely difficult to destroy Bitcoin inscriptions are not just a new canvas for digital art. They are a permanent archive. So where is the work that reflects that? Where are the inscriptions capturing endangered languages, oral histories, indigenous art forms, rituals, music, and stories that might otherwise disappear? Where are the collaborations with communities whose cultural heritage is at risk? Because the real breakthrough here is not that art can be bought and sold on chain. It is that culture, fragile, human, irreplaceable culture, can be etched into one of the most durable systems humanity has ever created. Imagine future generations being able to access fragments of civilisations not through secondhand interpretation, but directly, preserved, unaltered, and alive in their original form. That is not just art. That is legacy. And maybe the most important use of inscriptions is not speculation. It is stewardship.
