Stone cold racism on a scale I have NEVER seen in my lifetime is happening in real time.  Louisiana Governor Landry suspended a primary election — where tens of thousands of people had ALREADY VOTED — to redistrict and eliminate Black representation. Our country is supposed to be about the expansion of liberty and freedom. We're seeing the exact opposite.

Trump is expected to end his $10 billion suit against the IRS in exchange for the creation of a $1.7 billion slush fund to "compensate allies" who he claims without evidence were wrongfully targeted by the Biden admin — many being Jan. 6 insurrectionists. It would be an unprecedented use of taxpayer dollars with little oversight. abcnews.com/US/trump-poise…

One of the weirdest ideas out there is "objectification." Paying someone to do something with their body does not make them a "thing." I used to literally get paid for conflict - bouncing, street canvassing, merchant adventuring. I was not then a sword. More broadly, you can want to (say) anally fuck someone, or cut their throat and watch them bleed out, while fully aware they are human or were before painfully dying. You do not have to imagine that your kinky true love or hated enemy is a chair in order to do this. Many people need to expunge the stupid catechisms of Wokism later-wave feminism, Islam, non-muscular Christianity, and similar goofy religions from their glorious human brains. The brain is the mind, by the way.
Elle Kamihira@J42doc

Disagree. Surrogacy is ethically straightforward, much in the way prostitution is ethically straightforward. It is commodification and exploitation of women, reducing women to “things” for rent or purchase. Women will never attain full humanity as long as these practices exist.

The Nakba never ended. The Israeli apartheid regime is still committing genocide in Gaza and violently erasing entire communities across Palestine and Lebanon. I'm leading a resolution to recognize the 78th anniversary of Nakba and reaffirm Palestinian refugees' right of return.

@NYMag If he's not the king, who's taken his throne? Among conservatives?

There was a time, not very long ago, when Ben Shapiro could reasonably call himself the king of all conservative media. That’s all over now, writes political columnist Ross Barkan. Shapiro’s company, ‘The Daily Wire,’ is instituting significant layoffs. Its YouTube channel’s subscriber base is starting to shrink, and its website has emerged as one of the great traffic losers in conservative media. There are ‘Daily Wire’ YouTube videos that now, after a few days online, have less than 10,000 views, a catastrophically small number for a channel with more than 3 million subscribers. The top comments all mock the low view counts. “If a variety of poor business decisions can be blamed, in part, for the ‘Daily Wire’’s fall from grace — ill-fated investments in feature films, an epic fantasy series, and peculiar merchandise — the greater story is the collapse of Shapiro’s constituency,” writes Barkan. “There are two realities to Shapiro conservatism in 2026: It retains a significant foothold among Republican elites, and it is fast being rejected by the future grassroots of the party.” Read more: nymag.visitlink.me/KtpIKV

Life is like a guitar. @ericchurch offers a brillianct commencement address (and guitar lesson) at his alma mater, UNC, that belongs in the pantheon of addresses of this sort with those of Steve Jobs (Stanford) and David Foster Wallace (Kenyon College).

“We should regulate and ban modern guns because when the founders wrote the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms they meant muskets” … “We should regulate and ban muskets”
The Associated Press@AP

A musket from 1776 can fire a lead ball at a velocity of around 1,000 feet per second. Imagine what that can do to a human body. Yet under federal and most state laws, it’s exempt from gun regulations. Many antique or replica guns aren’t considered firearms and even convicted felons can own them.

“My biggest lesson from the 2024 election is that tactics don’t add up to a brand, and a brand is the most important thing in politics today. Without a brand that people genuinely feel is connected to your candidate’s deeply held beliefs, your tactics will add up to nothing. You’ll reach people but won’t close the deal.”

@MattWalshBlog Some truth to this, but the 2010's were defined by what Hollywood destroyed, rather than what it created.

There's a reason that the 00s feel like the last real decade. Something happened in 2009. iPhones invented two years before. Then in 2009, Facebook rolled out its personalized algorithm-driven feed. Twitter and Instagram followed a few years later. I really think, if you have to point to just one culprit (though there are several), it would be this. The algorithm killed the monoculture more than anything else. We live now in a culture almost entirely shaped by the algorithm, which is to say that we have no culture.

Every decade in modern American history can be identified and defined by its own style, its own approach to music, film, fashion, its own aesthetic. That seems to have stopped right around 2010. The 2010s don't really have their own unique feel, even in retrospect. The 2020s certainly don't. We're more than halfway through the decade. What are the movies, music, style, and trends that this decade will be remembered for? It's like we fell into some kind of cultural blackhole 15 years ago.
