It is not an insult for people back home to say that a new Zimbabwe will need a lot of Zimbabweans in the diaspora to return. More than 80% of Zimbabwe’s skilled citizens are outside the country.
To understand this, consider that there is 95% unemployment in Zimbabwe.
So where are the engineers, the top scholars, the leading professionals in an economy with such high unemployment? They are outside Zimbabwe.
To fix our roads, rail systems, education, healthcare and more, we will need Zimbabweans abroad to come back, those working for British Rail, those with international airlines, those building major infrastructure projects around the world.
At the moment, home is thin on talent. We have Zimbabweans running corporations across the globe. That is the talent needed back home.
To say so is not an insult, it is a reality, a practical necessity for a future, successful Zimbabwe to tap into its highly skilled and experienced diaspora.
With such a significant percentage of Zimbabwe's skilled citizens living and working abroad, their expertise will be invaluable in rebuilding and revitalizing the country's infrastructure, economy, and various sectors.
These professionals have been exposed to diverse work environments, international standards, and innovative practices, which will greatly benefit Zimbabwe as it strives to improve its roads, railways, education, healthcare, and more.
We need the skills, even in our politics, we will need people with professional track records instead of people with a stomach politics mentality!
One of the reasons why Rhodesia was successful economically under sanctions and a trade embargo was its emphasis on attracting professionals into politics.
