It's officially the warmest day of 2026 so far, with yesterday's temperature being surpassed! We’re currently at 25.2°C in Oak Park, Carlow. By this evening, temperatures could climb as high as 28°C, potentially breaking the current May record of 28.4°C. However, it's cooler along the northwestern and northern coasts due to the wind direction and the sea breeze blowing in from the north and northwest. This wind is expected to shift more to the northeast and easterly on Wednesday and Thursday, making the western and northwestern parts of Ireland the warmest areas. Today has been the warmest may day since 2010 with 24.9C recorded at Phoenix Park Airport. The last time temperatures got this high was back in 2010 when a high of 23.5C was recorded. Cloudy skies over the west and northwest this morning, with some patches of drizzle. However, the rest of the country is enjoying nice sunshine. Expect the cloud cover to clear from the north northwest and west this afternoon, leading to more sunshine in those areas. Temperatures will range from 18°C to 24°C. Tonight looks to be dry with clear spells for most, although sea fog may develop, particularly in the western half of Ireland. On Monday, we can anticipate sunshine across all areas as the sea fog dissipates in the morning. 🌡️ EXTREME HEAT IN PARTS OF EUROPE NEXT WEEK 🌡️ Next week, from Monday to Friday, parts of western Europe will experience extreme heat, particularly in Iberia, where temperatures in some areas of Portugal could hit 40°C. Many regions in Portugal, Spain, France, and Andorra are expected to see temperatures in the mid to high 30s, leading to heatwave conditions. This level of heat is considered dangerous, even for these countries. It’s estimated that in 2025, there were around 24,400 heat-related deaths across Europe, so please stay safe if you're outdoors in Ireland next week. For anyone traveling to the UK (England and Wales) next week, be aware that dangerous temperatures are also forecasted, reaching into the low to mid 30s from Sunday to Thursday, before dropping to the high to mid 20s later in the week. If your heading to Scotland especially northern Scotland take the woolly jumper. It will also be a very warm week in the Canary Islands with temperatures in to high 20s and low 30s. 🔥 TEMPERATURES COULD REACH 29C ON MONDAY 🔥 Temperatures in the east reached 22C today, with the best highs away from the west and northwest. Sunday is expected to bring warmer conditions for all regions, with temperatures ranging from 20C to 24C. There will be plenty of sunshine, making it feel quite warm. Keep in mind that UV levels will be very high. Monday will be notably warmer or hot in some areas, with temperatures ranging from 20C to 29C. The coolest places will be along the northwestern coastal fringes, while it will be warmer inland. The highest temperatures are forecasted for the south, southeast, and east, where they could reach between 26C to 28C, and possibly up to 29C locally in parts of the southeast inland. Expect nice warm sunshine as well, with high UV levels. Be aware that high temperature warnings might be issued for certain counties. From Tuesday to Thursday, the warm trend continues, keeping temperatures between 20C to 29C, with the warmest conditions in the west on Wednesday and Thursday. There will be good sunshine, but the risk of thunderstorms may increase due to rising temperatures and high atmospheric energy. Again, high temperature warnings could be issued, so stay prepared. ☀️ WARMER WEATHER BEGINS ON SATURDAY WITH TEMPERATURES UP TO THE MID 20S BY MONDAY 🌡️ Saturday marks the beginning of warmer weather, with a mix of bright and sunny spells, though a bit of cloud may linger. Expect the sunshine to strengthen across many areas in the afternoon and evening. However, coastal regions in the west and northwest could experience some cloud or sea fog, especially later in the day. Temperatures will range from 16°C to 20°C, with the warmest spots away from the western coasts. On Sunday, enjoy more good sunshine all around, with temperatures rising again. Many regions will see highs above 20°C, reaching up to 23°C away from western coasts. Though the sunshine will prevail, some hazy conditions and clouds may pop up, along with the possibility of sea fog. Looking ahead to Monday through Thursday, expect very warm weather, with temperatures climbing between 21°C and 26°C. The east and south will be the hottest on Monday and Tuesday, while western and northwestern regions will warm up more on Wednesday and Thursday. Good sunshine will continue, but some cloud and sea fog could be present, plus a potential risk of thunderstorms towards midweek. We'll have a clearer picture by Monday or Tuesday. As for the Bank Holiday weekend, there remains some uncertainty. A major fire has broke out at a business outside Donegal Town tonight on the Ballyshannon road. A number of fire units are on the scene fighting the fire. Thankfully there have been no reports of any injuries
