Unconstitutional. Offends freedom of personal liberty and freedom of expression, which entails the freedom to choose one’s means of self-expression. Hairstyle and dressing are significant ways of self-expression. The ethics of romanticism, which centers the self over society, requires that the individual remain free in these spheres. As J.S Mill will put it, over his body and mind, the individual is free. * What should be abolished is the Chieftancy institution.

Contestible whether beyond economics, the quality of life is entirely subjective. We have crime rates, infrastructure availability, health care policies and standards, and the functioning of social institutions that may offer lenses to making minimally determinate guesses about which societies offer a higher chance of a good or high-quality life. Rawls's theory of justice offers a glimpse into how social justice shapes the good life. Even Nozick’s consequentialism offers us some baseline test beyond mere economics.

@DonkorST I get your point totally. But I like the economic view because you can approximate some objective metrics. But beyond that, a person’s quality of life may depend exclusively on their personal circumstances.

It’s almost impossible to have this japa conversation without making it look like a judgment of a person’s life decisions. Once it veers from a purely economic discussion to measures of life quality, everybody gets defensive.
