You’d wonder whether some of the plastics, paper, metal or other materials (that don’t produce methane) would be better left in the ground instead of burning them though. 🤔

WtE does emit CO2, but landfills emit methane (25x worse). Modern Chinese plants use flue-gas treatment, and carbon-capture pilots are underway. Biogenic carbon (food/paper waste) is neutral. Is it perfect? No. But for 200M tons of annual waste, it's the best option available today. Open to better ideas.

🇨🇳China tackled its waste problem by building over 1,000 waste-to-energy plants, using a 150-year-old technology on a massive scale. Now, some cities even import trash to keep the system running. Turning pollution into power has become a global model!

@dominictsz Waste-to-energy isn't new, but China turned it from a niche solution into a backbone of urban waste management. That's demand. The rest of the world talks about the circular economy; China is just running it.
