My friend got laid off from his software engineering job in 2022.
42 years old. $195k salary gone overnight.
Meta, Google, and Amazon had just cut 200,000 jobs and the market was flooded with engineers.
He spent 14 months in an electrical apprenticeship. Last year he made $160k as a journeyman electrician specializing in data center builds.
2026 at 46 years old he make $270k with over time.
The same data centers his former employer runs. He told me he will never work for anyone who can lay him off with a Zoom call again.
Neither would I.

We have federally charged Chamel Abdulkarim, 29, of Highland, in connection with the massive blaze that destroyed a 1.2 million-square-foot warehouse in Ontario early Tuesday morning, causing damages estimated at over $500 million. Abdulkarim filmed himself setting merchandise on fire inside the warehouse and made statements criticizing capitalism and large corporations. He also compared himself to accused murderer Luigi Mangione. We will not tolerate political activists who resort to violence to advance their ideology. He is charged with arson of a building used in interstate and foreign commerce and used in activities affecting interstate and foreign commerce. This felony charge carries a five-year mandatory minimum prison sentence and a statutory maximum of 20 years in federal prison.

The @MayorofSeattle had a big community event at City Hall yesterday evening to announce progress on her centerpiece push to add 500 new enhanced shelter beds by the World Cup in June, and 1000 by the end of the year. This @seattletimes story gets at one prong of news coming out of her announcement: the first new shelter location is going to be 75 microunit pallet shelters (with services on site), each 70 sq ft, in Interbay. But it totally misses what may the bigger bit of political news she made: our socialist mayor announced that she has secured significant private financial support for her shelter initiative from some of Seattle's biggest, most establishment corporate players. She name checked Microsoft, Starbucks (didn't she tell us not to drink their coffee?!?), and T-Mobile as all ponying up for the effort. That's a significant win for our insurgent, outsider mayor, and the latest indicator that maybe just maybe she's not following the "ideological warrior" script to governance we've seen previously from left lane electeds in Seattle.
