23rd May 1972 – Remembering Kingsman Eustace Everett “Billy” Hanley Today we remember Kingsman Eustace Everett Hanley (service no. 24153597), aged 20, of the 1st Battalion, The King’s Regiment. Billy was shot dead by a Provisional IRA sniper while guarding a party of Royal Engineers who were clearing barricades in the Springhill Avenue / Ballymurphy area of west Belfast. He was hit in the neck and died instantly from his wounds. At the March 1973 inquest, a fellow soldier testified that he spotted the gunman and returned fire. The inquest was also told that young children were stoning the soldiers at the time. The coroner described his murder, and those of other soldiers, as “gangster killings by sectarian gunmen,” adding: “It was a sad thing that these young men died while trying to help us sort out our own problems.” Eustace Hanley was a young man of immense courage who served with commitment and honour. All who value truth and remembrance will never forget Billy and all the innocent lives taken during the Troubles.
