Back on this day in 2012, we dropped The 1st 28, the joint project from Styles P and Currensy.
To most people, it felt random. Came out of nowhere. No rollout, no long teaser campaign…just boom, here it is.
For me though, it was personal.
At the time, we were working heavy with Spitta and his manager Mousa on a lot of the Jet Life drops. I was also working closely with Styles who, to this day, is one of my favorite rappers, ever. I was out touring with the Rock The Bells tour when the idea hit me.
Two of the biggest smokers in the culture… and they’d never even met.
Different cities. Different sounds. Different circles. But something told me it would make sense.
So I connected them.
They clicked immediately. Within weeks, they were in the studio and knocked out a full joint project. For a stretch, they were talking every day, really locked in. Not that anything ever went left, but there was a short window where they were moving in sync like they’d known each other forever.
On paper, it shouldn’t have worked. New Orleans cool meets Yonkers grit. Jet Life meets D-Block. But somehow it blended perfectly.
That’s why this one always meant more to me. It wasn’t just another tape, it was two artists from completely different worlds coming together for a moment in time and creating something that felt effortless.
And it all started with The 1st 28.

Yams had just started A$AP Mob in 2007 too. Always working

In 2007, kids across the entire country received Dipset mixtapes packaged as Disney Channel Hits on Christmas Day. A$AP Yams was actually the mastermind behind this operation. He was working with Dipset handling their distribution to retail stores and even pulled this stunt with Kidz Bop CDs. Local news stations reported on this happening in California, Florida, Maryland, Texas, and New Jersey.
