Stumbled across this Turkish stone ball that was hurled into Vienna in the unsuccessful Ottoman siege of 1683. It's one of several across the city. Some aren't even original but made in commemoration in later years. Cities never forget the terror and trauma of a siege.

Going through my photo bank I came across this photo of the grave of a young lad from Newfoundland. Killed 14/4/1917 aged just 16. A long way from home. On that day the Newfoundland Regiment together with the 1st Essex attacked Infantry Hill to the east of Monchy-le-Preux. More.

3 Mar 1879, William Clark-Kennedy, VC, CMG, DSO & Bar, ED, born Scotland #OTD. While serving as Lt Col with 24th Bn Quebec Rgt (Victoria Rifles of Canada), he was awarded VC for action in France on 27/28 Aug 1918 in which his leg was shattered by machine gun fire. Died 1961. #WW1

#WomensHistoryMonth Sergeant Major Flora Sandes sacked off her job as a nurse with a British ambulance unit in the Balkans and joined the Serbian army. Wounded in action, she was promoted to Captain by the end of WW1. Afterwards she drove the first motorised taxi in Belgrade.
