A week ago at the @ICD2025Rome , I attended a talk that left a lasting impact on me — “Inspiring the Next Generation of Future Experts” by Prof Dlova Ncoza. What made it so powerful was not just her incredible achievements, but the way she openly shared her failures too.

Day 2, the International Albinism Awareness Day, started with an insightful session on dermatopathology, giving an overview on skin diseases. This was followed by continued screening and most importantly, the execution of skin cancer surgeries for several individuals in need.

This year’s theme, “Demanding our rights: Protect our skin, Preserve our lives,” highlights the urgent need for awareness, prevention, and access to essential healthcare for persons with albinism. While we’ve made encouraging progress, a lot still needs to be done in Burundi!!

Day 1 of the Albinism clinic was mainly dedicated to health education and skin cancer screening for people living with albinism (PWA). We had engaging sessions focused on sun protection and early detection of skin cancers, which remain a major concern for this community.
